I’ve heard of that practice but never the reasoning behind it. Do you or anyone know why they would boil the bones?

I think to get a better look at the structure/details in the bones.

My understanding is that it was done to clean the bones of any remaining bits of flesh or other dirt and debris so that they could be studied. I'm surprised that practice was still used in 2007.

Apparently Snohomish county boiled the Doe bones back in the old days which has made it impossible to extract usable DNA. So disappointing :(

So this case, and others where the bones have had the same treatment, are dead in the water?

Frankly boiling the bones sounds downright medieval.

Coffee56, the news article is vague, scattered bones were found at a makeshift campsite. I'll keep digging to ses if I can find anymore details.

The Daily Herald

Snohomish County sheriff's investigators on Tuesday collected bones found near a makeshift campsite off the Sultan Basin Road.

Detectives said it is too early to say if the remains are human.

Investigators did report finding an intact lower jawbone and what appeared to be ribs.

Two men stumbled across the bones Monday afternoon and reported the discovery later in the evening, sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

Investigators hiked up a hill into dense woods just off the Sultan Basin Road about 10 miles north of U.S. 2.

The makeshift campsite wasn't visible from the road.

Investigators with the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office collected the bones Tuesday afternoon.

This guy has DNA on file so I’m sure he’s an auto rule out but the little turn to the right of the nose got me. I photo blended and they line up quite well. Even brows. But I know how easy it is to “see” things line up. Throwing him up for thoughts.

Mark Hess. Little to no info.

Assuming the sketch is accurate, there's certainly a good resemblance.

Ferndale, where he was last seen, is only about an hour and a half away from where the remains were found.

He disappeared in 2002, and the decedent is estimated to have died 2002-2007, so the timeline works.

Seems like enough to make it worth checking that it really is a ruleout by default.

A new forensic drawing shows an unidentified man, known as the Sultan Basin John Doe, whose remains were found scattered in the woods north of Sultan in 2007. The 2021 drawing was the second attempt at a facial reconstruction by artist Natalie Murry. (Courtesy of Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.)
upload_2021-4-25_5-58-32.png

...Snohomish County detectives found the rest of the skull, more scattered human bones, clothing and the barest of essentials for camping at the site.

The man had been dead a while. Maybe a year. Maybe five. His identity is still unknown. So is what killed him.

This month marks 14 years since the John Doe’s remains were found northeast of Sultan. Investigators believe they are finally close to figuring out the man’s name, with the help of DNA, genealogy research and a fresh drawing of how his face might have looked.

DNA-based family trees created by an Oregon genealogist suggest the Sultan Basin John Doe has deep roots in Texas and Louisiana on one side of his family. On the other side, he has genetic ties to Plain people — as in Amish and Mennonite communities — in Ohio and Indiana. And certainly he has relatives elsewhere.

To restore the man’s identity, detectives need one more solid lead. Anyone who might know his name can contact the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office at 425-388-3393.

I recommend anybody following this case go read the whole article. Lots of information about the case and the reconstruction, and pictures of where his remains were found. (I wonder if he fell off that cliff.)

The new recon looks a heck of a lot like some of my relatives.
