There are so many great Lennon songs that picking one is hard. I picked "For the benefit of Mr. Kite" because the lyrics were inspired by a circus poster. In order to write that song from a limited source goes to show the level of his talent. JMO

I'm a "Strawberry Fields Forever" guy, but great choice of "Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite!", a truly underrated but overwhelmingly great Lennon contribution. That song, with its organ swells and its Pablo Fanques fair ("what a scene"), always reminded me of Halloween, and inevitably made it onto Halloween mix-tapes I would put together.

...One of the most musically complex songs on Sgt. Pepper, it was recorded on 17 February 1967 with overdubs on 20 February (organ sound effects), 28 March (harmonica, organ, guitar), 29 March (more organ sound effects), and 31 March.[4] Lennon wanted the track to have a "carnival atmosphere", and told producer George Martin that he wanted "to smell the sawdust on the floor." In the middle eight bars, multiple recordings of fairground organs and calliope music were spliced together to attempt to produce this request; after a great deal of unsuccessful experimentation, Martin instructed Geoff Emerick to chop the tape into pieces with scissors, throw them up in the air, and re-assemble them at random.[5]

On 17 February Lennon sings "For the benefit of Mr. Kite" in a joke accent, just before Emerick announces, "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!, this is take 1." Lennon immediately responds, "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!", reinforcing his title preference, a phrase lifted intact from the original poster. The exchange is recorded in The Beatles Recording Sessions (slightly misquoted)[2] and audible on track 8 of disc 2 of Anthology 2. The original recording can also be heard during the loading screen for the song if it is downloaded in the video game The Beatles: Rock Band....

I've always loved that story. It worked out so well. :thumb:

I'm not a fan of aftermarket videos made by people who put them up on Youtube but that's a great video.

Yep, I rarely seek out any Beatles videos (besides "Hard Day's Night," "Help," "Yellow Submarine," and "Magical Mystery Tour," of course!), but stumbled upon that one not long ago. From the opening snippet with John, Sean, and Yoko onward, it is amazing.

That last little bit ("Is he dead? / "Sit you down, father. Rest you.") is from King Lear, btw.

    Imagine there's no heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Others have their opinions but, for my money this is the very first heavy metal song.

I was always more into the Stones and other harder blues-oriented rock. Never liked the Beatles or Lennon much at all...
