Writer James Ellroy - Hardtalk speaks one of the greatest crime writers.

Big fan of Ellroy's work.
Ive read the "LA Quartet" several times. Brilliant work.

Memoir he wrote about his mother when he tried to solve her murder (it is still unsolved to this day).

I read that years ago and really liked it. What a horrible life he had. My dad lived in El Monte at the time of the murder (I did not live with him) and for a second I wondered if he was the "swarthy man". He drank a lot and went to low-rent bars and was swarthy. Freaked me out for a minute. But his age did not fit and I really don't think he would murder anybody. He died before I read the book so I could not ask him if he knew of the places in the book or had heard of the murder.
