Human remains found in Mercer; State Police search continues

Human remains have been discovered in the southeastern area of Mercer County, officials with the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment confirmed Monday morning.

Initial remains were discovered around 7 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement by First Sgt. J.K. Cooper, district commander of the Princeton and Welch detachments.

“As of this date a continued search of the area has resulted in more human remains located in the area by search teams,” Cooper said.

A State Police official said a variety of search methods are being utilized, including cadaver dogs.

The recovered remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for identification.

“At this time an identity or gender is unknown,” Cooper said.

The southeastern area of Mercer County includes the Oakvale, Willowton and Elgood areas, and borders Giles County, Va.

Cooper said the incident remains under investigation by the State Police and Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.

I was wondering if they meant one persons remains scattered around the area, or multiple persons remains too. I hope they clarify and identify this victim promptly.

There were multiple sets of remains found. Two were found in McDowell County and one in Mercer County. The remains found in Mercer County were identified as Amanda (BBM):

PRINCETON — Human remains discovered in the southeastern area of Mercer County were identified Tuesday as a woman missing from the Princeton area, West Virginia State Police officials said.

The remains are that of Amanda Presutti, who was reported missing by her family on June 9, First Sgt. J.K. Cooper, district commander of the Princeton and Welch detachments, said.

The initial remains were discovered around 7 p.m. Thursday, and a continued search of the area resulted in more remains being located, Cooper said.

The Mercer County case has not been linked to two other cases of human remains recently found in neighboring McDowell County.

“They are not related,” Sgt. A.P. Christian, with the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment, said.

“There is no evidence to suggest these cases are related,” Chief Deputy James E. Muncy Jr. said.

Homicide case ongoing: Police awaiting crime lab results in death of Princeton woman

The initial remains of Amanda Presutti, 34, of Princeton, were discovered June 20, 2019, in a rural area of eastern Mercer County.
    [...]
Trooper First Class D.B. Whited, of the State Police Princeton detachment, said Thursday that the investigation remains ongoing.

“We have a couple of leads that came in last month and we are waiting on evidence from the labs,” said Whited, who is lead investigator on the case.

Although troopers are following up on leads, Whited said “there is not enough evidence for an arrest at this time.”

Whited said evidence found at the scene was sent to the West Virginia State Police Crime Lab and the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center.
