Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

[...]

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

[...]

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Anyone who has seen Gabby or has any information on the case should contact the Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-8477.

We are starting to loose focus that this thread is about Gabby and the current search for Brian.

Mental Health: Only bring it into the discussion if it is a statement in media or LE reports. Do not expand beyond what has been provided to us regarding Gabby and/or Brian and mental Health.

Domestic Violence: Many posters here have stories. In our own personal ways, we all have stories. The challenge we have in these threads is the separation of our personal stories and the focus of the thread.

This thread is about Gabby's story.

As mods, we have hearts, we care about each of you, and it is hard to delete a post on thread that may include your personal story. However, we have to remind ourselves this is about Gabby's story. Please keep her the focus of the thread.

I mean, it could be him but, JMO, he looks a little bigger than the pictures and videos we have seen of him.
Still, what's a random guy doing out roaming the woods at 6:17am on September 20th in Florida?

Guy in the wilderness cam seems to have a neck tattoo or possibly a wound from trying to hang himself. Hard to tell.

Based on the video on their Nomadic Statik youtube channel, they didn't seem to use the van to live in or sleep, they would sleep in a tent and do most things outside of the van. The van was just used for travel/storage. There was no bed in the back of it, just a makeshift area to sit on. It's possible they walked away from the van with their tent and other items and camped away from it.

For their final camping spot at Spread Creek, it appears they chose an available parking spot away from other people (we usually do that too but do not favor sleeping right at the roadside, due to so many glaring lights all night long as late comers arrive all night - there are no controls on how many people can pass through a dispersed campground).

This particular campground had both dispersed and non-dispersed camping, by which I mean it had some clearly marked spots close to each other. In dispersed camping, there are no rules about how many people "per campsite" the way there are in most developed NF campgrounds. RV's are welcome at this particular place (see Dyrt.com for more details). Someone who could find parking could put their tent anywhere, which is what I imagine Gabby and BL meant to do or did do.

Grizzly bears are not commonly seen in that area (black bears are, so leaving one's tent up during the day could be a problem). I personally would be worried about tent-sleeping in that campground (we stick all our stuff atop our SUV in the Teton/Yellowstone area and manage to sleep inside - we also use our small tent to store the non-food stuff we carry so that we have room).

I do wonder how long the van was at that particular pull-out and if there's any evidence that the tent was ever used there.

Gabby Petito case: What one witness saw near the Tetons may help FBI unravel mystery

When Jessica Schultz first spotted the white van near Grand Teton National Park one evening in late August, her first reaction was irritation.

The van’s driver seemed to have no idea where he was going, and was moving too slowly down a narrow, one-car-width road near a dispersed camping area called Spread Creek in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.

She was trapped behind the slow-moving vehicle until the driver at last halfway pulled over — with only the van’s nose off the road in an area that wasn’t a designated pull-out. This forced Schultz to drive off the road a bit to get around — and as she passed, she looked over and saw that the van’s driver was alone — a “generic” young white guy.

When Schultz and her friend first tipped off the FBI on Thursday, the two gave the agents coordinates of where they believed they last saw the van.

Gabby Petito Tipster Recalls Guy in Van ‘Acting Weird’ Near Camping Area Where Body Was Found

Jessica Schultz says she alerted the FBI about a strange man she says she had encountered driving a van in the area and “acting weird” days after Petito was last seen alive.

Schultz said she and another camper friend contacted the FBI on Thursday and spoke to someone about what they saw. She said the FBI called her back on Sunday morning, the day a body — believed to be Petito’s — was found in the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area, a remote swath of alpine land where Schultz told the FBI she saw the van. Schultz and a group of other campers arrived at the camp area in late August for several nights and noticed a van that seemed like it didn’t belong. Schultz said she saw the van on Aug. 26 along with the young man — and saw the van again on the 27th and possibly the 28th without the man or anyone else around it.

It was that footage that convinced Schultz that what she saw might be relevant. The so-called “van life” community — a movement of nomadic adventurers who live out of their vehicles — is brimming with vans that look like the one that housed Petito and Laundrie. But the body cam footage depicted something that Schultz recalled in the van she spotted — a distinct straw hat visible from the windshield.

“My friend texted me a picture of the hat on the dashboard and I just lost my s—,” Schultz said. “And that’s when I called the FBI (on Thursday) and said, ‘Guys, look at Spread Creek.’”

Schultz said she saw the van on Aug. 26, when she and her Blue Heeler, Rosie, were headed to a dispersed campsite to meet with Schultz’s friends. As Schultz pulled around the van, she decided to check out who was inside to see if they were people who would want to chat or join their group.

Once seeing the man was much younger than her crowd, Schultz decided to pass on the invite and kept moving.

“I’m pretty sure he got out of the van to like look around or something,” Schultz recalled seeing as she drove by. “There’s definitely nobody in that passenger seat; like he definitely doesn’t have a girl in there.”

Schultz saw the same van again the following day as she was riding in the passenger seat of her friend’s truck. The van was in almost the exact same area — though it appeared to have pulled over to the right before backing up into a spot across the road.

“I was like, ‘Oh, that guy stayed the night,” Schultz recalled telling her friend, noting that it wasn’t a parking spot.

Schultz said that what was unusual about the van during the second sighting was that there were no indications that anyone was camping there — and it was not in a designated parking spot. Normally, parked campers will do things like put out a hammock or table, or open a window, Schultz said.

Schultz said she thinks she and her friends saw the van in the same spot for a third day, on Aug. 28, and were surprised it hadn’t been booted by then — because it was not in a designated parking spot. She doesn’t recall seeing it on Aug. 29.

When Schultz and her friend first tipped off the FBI on Thursday, the two gave the agents coordinates of where they believed they last saw the van. She also chronicled her sightings on TikTok, where her posts about Petito have drawn more than 1 million views by Monday evening.

Gabby Petito case: What one witness saw near the Tetons may help FBI unravel mystery

What the FBI said was only in reference to the search for BL. It could just be semantics at this point. I am not going to get excited until there is something to get excited about and we get clear confirmation.

Quoting myself... @Alethea
Florida police say the Gabby Petito case is officially a criminal investigation as her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, remains missing

"Florida police said for the first time on Tuesday that the Gabby Petito case was now officially a criminal investigation as authorities continue to search for her missing fiancé, Brian Laundrie.

"This is an FBI-led criminal investigation and North Port Police are assisting our federal partner in any way we can to bring this investigation to a close," Josh Taylor, a spokesperson for Florida's North Port Police Department, said in a statement."

I can't find anything that pertains to the criminal investigation involving the search for BL. It looks like it was NP LE that made the statement this is officially a criminal investigation report. I think you are correct; it was a blanket statement and had more to do with the GP angle.

Trying to keep myself in check as we anxiously await for any crumbs we might get from the autopsy.

Yeah, whatever the source of this information, I've got to believe that they believe there's a good chance he's there.

People were questioning how they knew he arrived in Florida on the 1st. It turned out a license plate reader and witness sightings were the source, and not the family.

Likewise, I don't believe it's merely the family's statement that they are going off in regards to this particular search.

So even if he's not there, I believe he was there.
Good point and I think it has been said before, we all know that LE/FBI isn't going to allow all to be revealed. Of all the things we have seen come out that we didn't know for the longest time, who knows what other details they are keeping close to the vest. Even if he is not there and the believe he was, they may have reason to want to locate where he was, what he had there, what was possibly left behind (notes, maps, etc) to help figure out where he was headed. I just hope they find him sooner rather than later.

Side note - can you imagine seeing this all done to your family and still not turning yourself in?

I’m not saying this is the guy but whoever was on my trail camera this morning in Baker, Fl strongly fits the description of Brian Laundrie, authorities have been contacted but people in the North West Florida area be on the look out," a Facebook user named Sam Bass wrote last night about the picture taken at 6:17 a.m. local time Monday morning.

"Obviously we will keep everyone in the loop if and when there is anything to report," the sheriff's office added.

Compare the size and distinct shape of the ears in both photos. Interesting

Would they be doing some sort of unrelated survey right now?
