Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

[...]

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

[...]

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Anyone who has seen Gabby or has any information on the case should contact the Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-8477.

Mod Note:

We are starting to lose focus that this thread is about Gabby and the current search for Brian.

Mental Health: Only bring it into the discussion if it is a statement in media or LE reports. Do not expand beyond what has been provided to us regarding Gabby and/or Brian and mental Health.

Domestic Violence: Many posters here have stories. In our own personal ways, we all have stories. The challenge we have in these threads is the separation of our personal stories and the focus of the thread.

This thread is about Gabby's story.

As mods, we have hearts, we care about each of you, and it is hard to delete a post on thread that may include your personal story. However, we have to remind ourselves this is about Gabby's story. Please keep her the focus of the thread.

…Luke said the park, “is beautiful the way it is right now, even if we didn’t do anything for 10 years,” and added that she saw a benefit of keeping the park, with one of the spurs of the Legacy Trail ending at the park. That spur, which follows a Florida Power & Light power line path, is already in use.

This article is from May 2021. I wonder if construction is still going on in these areas.
A mix of roads, bike lanes, sidewalks, and multi-use trails via Border Road will connect the Legacy Trail in Venice to the trail in Deer Prairie Creek Preserve. The county will also be making improvements to two other trails in the area — the South Power Line Trail in Carlton Reserve that connects with Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, and another that will connect the north and south entrances of Deer Prairie Creek Preserve — and provide users with more trail options. Stay tuned for more information as the North Port Connector unfolds over the coming year.

Okay I understand what you are saying. But just for a moment, step outside the way you are thinking and think with the heart. If someone called you and said my daughter is missing she was with your son, is he there? And let's say for the sake of argument you know your son is a mischievous rapscallion. And you know he is mendacious. And you go and you ask him and he won't answer. Do you do everything to cover for him and his ways? Or do you answer the phone or send a text like I suggested earlier. If you want to protect your son, you do that. If you want to do the right thing, you answer the phone.

No I wouldn't protect my son if I thought GP's life was in danger. Thats been my whole point about their silence. They aren't silent because they are horrible people. They are silent because they just got horrible news and know that GP's life is not in danger because it has already ended. And now its their son's life that is in danger.

I consider myself pretty fair minded and I’d like to believe the Laundrie parents are good people with a troubled son.
But with that said no way can I understand them not returning the phone calls from Gabby’s parents. Putting two and two together they had to know or guessed something was amiss with Gabby.
Even if they had answered the phone and said Brian is here but Gabby isn’t or if they didn’t know even saying the kids had a fight and we have no idea what’s going on!
Anything would have been better than the nothing!

I’m bringing over my last post from previous thread, because I forgot to provide link for info.

My response:
Last I saw was BabyL putting up a tweet with a photo of more dribble from SB. Now he is claiming CL searched for BL on 9/13/21 for 4-5 hrs-you know, on that day the Laundrie’s couldn’t correctly remember the last time they sawBL cuz they were incorrectly associating his presence with other events?
Even this latest claim by the atty seems off. Consider: if BL went out for a hike early Monday morning(9/13/21) how long would he have to be gone before the parents thought hmmm, maybe we should go take a peek? And then they still had 4-5 hrs of daylight still left to stroll around the reserve?

try again SB.

Why would you in this situation if you have already told your attorney and LE all you know. I wouldn't imagine it would be a joyful experience for either family.

BBM
All this is out the door if he's offered a reasonable explanation.

If someone I know, or even barely know, is texting and calling telling me their child is missing, and I don't respond, would feel like I was being cold-hearted and downright weird IMO

But this situation goes further than that and is even worse. Gabby's family was asking for responses from the people who Gabby lived with. And the parents of the person she was travelling with. Asking if they had seen Brian or Gabby.

From the previous thread

Isn't that the point of "dispersed camping"? It means camping outside of a designated campground.

Dispersed camping is the term used for camping anywhere in the National Forest OUTSIDE of a designated campground. Dispersed camping means no services; such as trash removal, and little or no facilities; such as tables and fire pits, are provided. Some popular dispersed camping areas may have toilets.

So yes, outside of a designated campground, but even with dispersed camping, some places have designated camping areas. I think spread creek had numbered campsites.

Fishlake National Forest - Recreation

Yes, there were designated camping spots @ Spread Creek is my understanding it was brought up by somebody who was camping there and was interviewed.

Somebody previously brought up perhaps he parked there for access to the area and it was away from others prying eyes. I'd like to see those designated spots on the map in relation to where the van is and where Gabby was found. Might not mean anything might mean alot.

I had to being this over from the last thread.
We do not know how long Gabby lived with them though. IIRC they had not been at their current address for very long and also IIRC G and B lived with CaL for some time.

The point of my post, was that we do not know what the dynamics were of the parental relationships. We also do not know, what Brian told his parents (and perhaps CaL also) but whatever it was, must have fit with the vibe they had of Gabby. I suspect that they only became suspicious when the calls from Gabbys parents started (and was it both parents or just her mother?) and they got advice from their attorney, which probably said, do not speak to anyone, direct them to me.

Remember, we do not have the full facts. We have only heard one side of the story.

MOO but I think that having the dad go out to the reserve was likely to identify a camp sight, to see if it was set up in the typical way BL would do things. I personally think that BL isn’t in that Reserve since as far as we know there has been no sightings of him (i am fully aware there could be sightings we aren’t told of).

I believe the parents helped BL leave the area, but have wanted LE to assume he is in that reserve. If that is the case, having the dad identify stuff at a camp sight is rather point less.

Say for example they found a fire ring arranged a certain way, found knots tied a unique way, or found some little piece of gear or something. Even if it WASN’T BL’s, wouldn’t it be in BL’s best interest for his dad to say those were his belongings or how he arranged fire pits or tied knots? Wouldn’t that serve to keep the focus on the reserve? How can they trust anything the guy says?

Maybe the FBI planted some items there for the dad to identify to see if he would say they were BL’s things.

NPPD visted the Laundrie home on the 10th.

SEP 10:: Gabby’s mother texted BL and his mother, RL, trying to get in touch with Gabby, but neither replied. The family alerted the National Park Service.

Sept 10- Incident : redacted police report police response at the home where Gabby lived with BL and his parents at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 10.

I'm pondering (and maybe overthinking) what today's actions were all about. Why would they take CL on foot, no protective gear at all, no waders , no boots just ordinary street clothes. If they think BL is armed and they were fearing suicide or a shootout with LE wouldn't they have given both him and his escort some bullet proof vests or something. If they feel that BL's state of mind is such that he may become violent or that his mental status is compromised due to dehydration, lack of sleep , hunger etc, they can't know that he wouldn't just shoot whoever gets near him! So then maybe they *weren't* expecting to come across BL at all but then what reason would they have for bringing CL there? If it was items they wanted identified it could have been done with a picture. His favorite hiking areas could be marked on a map so no need to bring him there for those reasons. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what could only be accomplished by CL's physical presence at the site.

Anything would have been better than the nothing!
But they did know what was going on and that nothing they could do would change it. From there, protection mode is the only thing that makes sense. You do the right thing for yourself but their priority was him.
