I was thinking the same thing about not having money.

I’m curious what she did the entire time BL was back home in Florida. She’s not comfortable driving the van, so did she just stay in the hotel all day? Did he take the van to the airport and leave it there while he was gone?

The sighting on the 25/26 proves that nothing bad happened to her while he was away. He wasn’t back for very long before something did happen to her though.

Well, that would be a weird, and unwarranted "confession" to make to police, that they were both bipolar but unmedicated, if they'd never been diagnosed. If your theory is true, it could mean that when police asked BL if he was on meds, saying he was acting "hyper", he may have made up the "bipolar" story to explain his (at that moment) "hyper" state. But he seems to have calmed down pretty quickly, and changed his demanor entirely, to being kind of chummy and jovial with police.

    Strange.

    Sorry about that.

The important part states that a witness who called the police saw them arguing and hitting each other, which makes them both responsible for the DV report.

Oh yes! Granted there have been many cases of that but specifically the 2005 case that made national news…..that happened in my hometown(small world). I was in high school at the time but I remember it well. The boyfriend/groom owned a local MD practice and it took years for him to retain the reputation of his name back.

Anyways I don’t think that’s whats going on with this case….Gabby being a runway bride…..BUT anything is possible.

Retired FBI special agent gives insight on disappearance of Gabby Petito - East Idaho News

He has investigated missing people before and says law enforcement has to keep an open mind in their search for Petito.

“Did she walk away? Is she somewhere out there and just doesn’t want to be found or did something bad happen to her?” Montoya tells EastIdahoNews.com. “It seems like there’s a lot of information that they can sift through that may lead to the declaration that her boyfriend (BL) is a suspect or can be charged with a crime.”

Montoya believes police will go through Petito’s 2012 Ford Transit van “with a fine-toothed comb” and scour her social media accounts for any clues as to where she could be. They may also be looking for any connection to a double-homicide that occurred in Moab during the time Petito and Laundrie were in the area.

I think they were very wise to release that video. A picture is worth a thousand words when looking for a missing girl.

But didn’t Petito herself admit on the bodycam footage that the reason she was hitting him (while driving) was because “he wouldn’t stop telling her to calm down”? Not because he was taking the car or worried he would steal it/abandon her.

And she also admitted that she “may have” touched the steering wheel and tried to get him to pull over because there was cops behind them and she called him an idiot. That would explain the sharp swerve made when they pulled over. Petito caused that too. Maybe.

And Isn’t it possible that he was in a situation where he was in a fight with a manic woman AND trying to drive and you don’t always react to everything happening quickly enough (like cops being behind you).

    - I am still very open minded to this case. He could have killed her purposely, by accident, he could have just plainly went home and left her, she could have left him and then disappeared, she could have been kidnapped by the lesbian couple’s murderer, and then there’s aliens. There’s always aliens. I say that half jokingly (see Skywalker Ranch and other NP missing persons reports). -

    As always, IMO

Exactly. To blame a victim is to silence the victim. Blame shifting empowers the abuser, who then bullies his way into control, creating sympathy for himself. Brian is attempting to lessen his guilt by putting Gabby on public trial. Just how far will Brian go to lessen the guilt he feels? Is he feeling a need to justify his actions?

FBI can't make GP's family not discuss the relationship - but has asked them not to. FBI may not have made the same request to BL's sister or she may just not be complying.

I wonder about the reason. Are they worried about BL's mental state?

"(NBC News) — Witnesses are beginning to provide pieces of the puzzle as investigators search for clues in the disappearance of North Port woman Gabby Petito.

Petito, 22, left New York to embark on a cross-country trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, 23. She last contacted her family around the end of August, when the couple was visiting Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park.

Cops ‘not ruling out’ potential link between Gabby Petito’s disappearance, Utah couple’s murder

On Thursday, police in Moab, Utah, released body camera video showing officers pull over their van at Arches National Park after a witness reported seeing them arguing and hitting each other. The video shows Petito trying to explain what sparked the argument and Laundrie talk to police. The couple agreed to give each other space and spend the night apart. No arrests were made.

Laundrie returned to their North Port, Florida home without Petito on Sept. 1. He is considered a person of interest in the case, according to police.

Now authorities in Wyoming are searching Grand Teton National Park, the last place she was seen.

Shannon Baker said she spotted the couple’s van on Aug. 25 and contacted police.

“It had the black ladder on the back and the two black rooftops on top—the two bars—and we made the comment that would be the perfect little camper van to go around in,” Baker said.

Polk County teens arrested after taking part in ‘devious lick’ TikTok challenge, sheriff says
Investigators are hoping more people come forward with information regarding the case.

“You never know what you’ve got in a photo,” said Teton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Clayton Platt. “Low and behold there was a van that matches the description of this van in this case. All those little pieces can be pieces in the puzzle to help us figure out where Gabby is.”

Multiple agencies, including the FBI, local police and the National Park Service are working together to aid in the investigation."

  18. It's interesting that September 1st is stated as the definitive date that Brian returned. I wonder how LE knows this? Maybe a neighbor, or is there some cell phone info?

Also, I am using Utah Statutes for controlling law, as we are not sure where GP lost possession of the van.

The above-quoted definition is the standard definition of larceny specifically tailored to auto theft.
Utah Criminal Code § 76-6-412 refers to all forms of larceny as theft; the definition therein states: "A person commits theft if he obtains or exercises unauthorized control over the property of another with a purpose to deprive him thereof." (See: https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title76/Chapter6/76-6-S404.html?v=C76-6-S404_1800010118000101)

The reason, IMO, that BL can't be charged with theft is twofold. First, notice the term "unauthorized" in the definition of theft. LE cannot determine whether BL was given permission to "exercise...control over the property" of GP, namely the van and the contents therein. Thus, element one of theft isn't met. Second, notice the language "...with a purpose to deprive him thereof." This is the equivalent of the standard laid out in the definition you have quoted as "permanently or significantly to deprive the owner of it." And therein lies the problem; LE has no indication that BL wanted to do so. Thus, element two is not met.

IMO, if LE were able to charge BL with such, they certainly would have by now, as they would love any reason to be able to detain and question him.
