Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

-Deer Cam individual has been identified and IS NOT BRIAN
-Brian Laundrie is officially named a POI by Law Enforcement

More serious criminal charges against Gabby Petito’s missing boyfriend Brian Laundrie are “extremely likely” if he’s found alive, the state attorney for Palm Beach County in Florida has claimed.

David Aronberg defended his office for not filing charges against Mr Laundrie, saying “prosecutors have a higher burden to prove cases beyond any reasonable doubt”.


Asked by News Nation Now why Mr Laundrie hadn’t been charged with a more serious crime at this point in the death of his 22-year-old travel blogger girlfriend, which has been ruled a homicide, Mr Aronberg added: “I think that’s coming.”

A couple of unrelated points that came to mind after reading over the posts I missed last night.

First, if there are any negative implications to the idea that BL apparently did not attend college, they would also apply to GP, as there is no indication she attended college either as far as I know. Personally I don't think anything useful to this case can be gleaned from their college plans.

Second, when we say that "nobody has come forward" to confirm something, that means nobody has come forward to the public. There may well be witnesses who have come forward to police. We can't assume that because there is no public confirmation of, say, BL moving stuff out of a storage locker or GP spending a full week in a hotel, doesn't necessarily mean it didn't happen.

A cold case is any criminal investigation by a law enforcement agency that has not been solved for (generally) at least one year and, as a result, has been closed from further regular investigations.

A cold case may be closed for various reasons such as: previously available technology was not able to adequately analyze the evidence in order to form a conclusion; witnesses were hostile and uncooperative; various time constraints hindered the investigation; the originally assigned detectives had a heavy workload; a lack of worthwhile leads stalled the case.

I know there are still leads coming in, however I was just wondering when does this become a cold case? When the leads stop?

Good Morning, WSers. Wow, I just watched the Dennis Davis interview. Sounds totally legit. Don't see how this could be a make believe sighting, IMO. Hopefully today is the day. Woke up with a weird feeling about today. Fingers crossed.

It's about whether BL's got any life goals, not a diss against those without formal education. Apparently there is a subculture, NEET, in which individuals are Not in Education, Employment, or Training. Member @NorthErn2 brought it up way back in thread #16, pg 54, in discussing how BL displays some of the NEET traits.

eta: Yes, @Allabouttrial, you're right, BL held down a job. From his comments, he didn't appear to appreciate all the hard work GP put into the SM instead of giving him attention. There's also criticism that he lived at home and aside from GP's trip, didn't aspire to do anything else. MOO: During their relationship, BL didn't have any goals, and that's the issue, not whether they're educated. Maybe it put stress on an already tense situation?

GP was definitely not a NEET, as she worked a variety of jobs, took the initiative to do the cross country trip, and spent countless hours building her online channel.

I think those who are dubious are not dubious about him meeting someone who resembled BL. They are just wondering if it was actually BL, or someone else who was jerking his chain (as we would say in Australia).

Brian has had a job though. He was also on the cross country trip and wasn't he participating in the channel?
