Are mayoral candidates really well vetted, though? To the best of my knowledge, anyone can apply to be mayor. You can expect a certain level - maybe they are unlikely to be, say, homeless - but I once interviewed a former mayoral candidate for a potential roommate. Said mayoral candidate worked at the public library, and I'm sure was probably a fine upstanding citizen; but only got a pittance of a vote, and certainly wasn't affiliated with a party, and it was a real eye-opener to me of what types of candidates could potentially lurk under the tame guise of "Independent" - you know, those folks on the ballot that you generally don't know of unless you're, like, their next-door neighbor or something.
