''A teenage Chinese girl has been killed and her fellow student has been charged with murder after a stabbing at their host family’s home.

Emergency services were called at about 10.20pm on Monday after one of the hosts heard a commotion and found a 14-year-old girl with an injury to her torso.

She was treated at the scene before paramedics took her to John Hunter hospital, where she later died.

A 13-year-old girl, also a Chinese student, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder.

She has been refused bail and will appear in a children’s court on Wednesday.

The pair travelled to Australia as part of a program to attend a local school and were staying at the same home.''

A 13-year-old girl is in police custody after allegedly stabbing and killing a 14-year-old girl with a kitchen knife. The young Chinese nationals only met a week ago, when they arrived in Australia as part of an exchange program.

OMG - what a nightmare.

I myself was a foreign-exchange student in high school. The students, no matter where we were from, formed such a tight bond and fast. I can't even imagine this scenario.

The host family must be devasted as well as the families in China. It is a responsibility to take in a child you don't know from another culture and integrate them into the family life. The host moms, in particular, are such an integral part of the experience (host dads and siblings too, of course).

The only situation I can imagine, off the top of my head, is a romance gone wrong. But they are so young!

I feel so badly for the family back home who never expected their child wouldn't return home safely :(

I also feel for the family of the girl arrested.

''The girl and fellow student were part of a three-week exchange program and had known each other for just eight days.''

''They arrived in Australia eight days ago and were expected to leave on August 16.
Police believe the girls did not know each other before arriving and only became acquainted through the program.

They were staying with a host family consisting of a man and a woman in their 50s.''

Court hears 13yo Chinese student was mentally unwell during alleged stabbing of 14yo

Magistrate Andrew Eckhold told the court the accused's mental health may have led to her being "disassociated and psychotic" at the time of the alleged murder.

"It's a very complex matter," Magistrate Eckhold said.

The lawyer acting on the girl's behalf did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused.

A spokesperson for the Council of Australian Student Exchange Organisations (CASEO) told the ABC in a statement the girls were not on a student exchange program, but on a "study tour".

Thirteen years old seems so young to have a violent psychotic episode. Were there previous incidents or was this out of the blue? 😳

Could she have somehow come across some meth or that fake pot they used to sell in convenience stores? It just seems so weird that a 13 yr old was in such a psychotic state ---was there no warning nor any previous episodes?

This reminds me of the Gunnedah (New South Wales, Australia) girl of about the same age, who fatally stabbed her younger cousin. Probably a similar condition. So tragic.

Then how the heck did she get accepted into the program???

There should have been interviews, meetings, etc. before the program. I realize that not every problem can be predicted, but if a child exhibits this extreme violence, were there no red flags in advance? None??

As I mentioned above, I was an exchange student in high school and as an adult, I stayed involved in the program in various roles. Part of my duties was interviewing prospective students. Of course, I don't claim perfection, but there were students we suggested wait a year as they didn't display the maturity it takes to travel abroad without family.

In this case, it was only a three-week "study tour," but perhaps age 13 is too young. Clearly this student was not capable to handle it - was that apparent to anyone in advance?

What happened?

So upsetting. Really feeling for all the families.

A 13-year-old Chinese exchange student has been charged with the stabbing murder of a 14-year-old fellow exchange student. Mental health issues were likely involved, and the child had a substantial amount of medications in her possession.
