Fresh appeal to find man charged with rape in Fitzroy 50 years ago
Victoria Police have launched a new plea for information in relation to George Karakis, who they say failed to appear in court in 1974 after being charged with breaking into a home and assaulting a woman.

Police said the Türkiye-born man required a Greek translator during his 1974 interview.
''He has been described as being about 162cm tall with brown eyes and a two centimetre scar over his left eyebrow.
"There will absolutely be people out there who … may even know where he is now residing," Senior Constable Roberts said.
"Given the length of time, there is also the possibility he has passed away.
"We just want to find answers so we can close this chapter in our victim's life."
Anyone with information about Mr Karakis or his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.''

Hope new images will crack cold case 50 years on
A woman has waited more than 50 years for her attacker to be brought to justice, as police release new images in a bid find him and solve the case.
Police believe there are people who know where Karakis lives. (HANDOUT/VICTORIA POLICE)
"It is hoped new images of a man wanted for the brutal rape of his neighbour 50 years ago will finally bring him to
justice.
The 30-year-old woman was asleep in her Melbourne home in the early hours of July 22 1974, when she was woken by a stranger and raped.
Nine days later police charged her neighbour George Karakis with rape, burglary and indecent assault.''
''More than 50 years after his arrest, police on Monday released his 1974 mug shot as well as a digitally generated image of what Karakis could look like today.
At the time of the attack, Karakis was 27 and livingwith his wife, sister and brother-in-law in Gore Street, Fitzroy - the same street the rape occurred.
Detective Senior Constable Ruby Roberts said Karakis' victim was now in her 80s and had been forced to live most of her life knowing this man had not faced court for the "brutal" crime.''
