Peta Weber has been missing since 1997.

Police have told an Coronial Inquest they believe Peta Weber was murdered in Albany in 1997.

A woman who went missing in southern Western Australia was "killed and buried" by her husband, who made up a series of events about her disappearing near an ocean cliff, police have told a WA coroner.

Peta Simone Weber, 25, was last seen in June 1997.

The inquest, held before Coroner Sarah Linton in Perth today, heard police believed her husband Richard Weber had killed his wife and buried her at a rural property near Albany.

More than half a dozen of Ms Weber's friends and family members were present in court.

Her daughter was in attendance, but her son did not attend but had provided statements to authorities.

The family placed multiple images of Ms Weber around the courtroom and were teary throughout the hearing

Detective Sergeant Taylor said when police searched the property for the possible burial site, nothing was found and that the land had been bulldozed and turned into a bluegum plantation.

Detective Sergeant Taylor told the court he believed Ms Weber had been buried somewhere at the property and that she had "met with foul play".

Claremont killings used resources

During the hearing, Commander Seivwright spoke about his disappointment in not being able to get WA Police resources for the Albany case.

He said the Claremont killings had just occurred and that all resources were devoted to that.

Commander Seivwright said he had hoped to get a covert investigation underway, but by the time it was approved, Mr Weber had died by suicide.

He said he believed that if police had tracked Mr Weber's car, he would have taken them to the burial site.

Days after the third anniversary of Ms Weber's disappearance, Mr Weber took his life amid relationship issues with a separate woman, who, in a statement, told the court he was controlling.

The court was asked whether there was truth in rumours that Mr Weber made a confession in a suicide note, but was told that did not occur.

The coroner will now consider the case and issue findings later this year

"It's so easy to commit the perfect crime" were the words Richard Weber reportedly told his new partner in the years after his wife Peta Simone Weber disappeared in June 1997.
