A desperate search continues for a mother-of-three who vanished without a trace after heading off on a 20km run during a heatwave.

Samantha Murphy, 51, was last seen leaving her home on Eureka Street in Ballarat East, about 100km northwest of Melbourne, at 7am on Sunday.

It's understood she was planning to run through the Canadian State Forest and was captured on CCTV wearing a brown singlet and black half-length leggings.

The mother-of-three has now been missing for almost 36 hours

Her 'upset and concerned' family hold grave concerns and described her disappearance as out of character.

Detailed timeline of search here

Police and the SES searched the state forest area behind the Buninyong Golf Club on Monday.

“The area of search isn’t completely remote, we are on the outskirts of Ballarat, and it’s not that far from urban areas as well,” MacDougall said.

Acting Inspector MacDougall said data received from Ms Murphy’s phone, which she had been carrying at the time, pinged near the golf course.

  • In short: Ballarat East woman Samantha Murphy left for her regular morning run on Sunday but failed to return home.
  • Emergency services and volunteers have been searching bushland between her home and Buninyong 12km away, and have now added areas around Black Hill, closer to central Ballarat.

Golf course became significant due to a rumour that her phone pinged near a golf course that was 11 km from her home. Today, that is unverified - conflicting reports.

In short:

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 23, has faced court after being charged with the murder of missing Ballarat woman Samantha Murphy, who disappeared while on a jog over six months ago.

Mr Stephenson's defence and prosecutors requested a 12-week adjournment in order to go through a "huge amount" of evidence.

What's next?

Mr Stephenson will remain in custody until the matter returns to court on November 14.

An "unprecedented" amount of evidence, including extensive CCTV footage, is causing delays in court for the matter of Patrick Orren Stephenson, accused of murdering Victorian woman Samantha Murphy.

The 23-year-old appeared before the Ballarat Magistrates' Court via video link on Thursday.

He wore a white t-shirt and occasionally glanced around the empty room he sat in, only speaking to acknowledge that he could hear the magistrate on a few occasions.

Mr Stephenson was arrested and charged with murdering Ms Murphy in March, more than a month after her disappearance.
