I wonder whether he may have gone abroad. My reason for saying this is the absence of US records for him (other than addresses) combined with an Ancestry record for the arrival of an Alexander Lengheimer in Melbourne, Australia in 1958. The record records his destination in Australia as the Bonegilla CIC(Commonwealth Immigration Centre) - in other words he was emigrating to Australia, having embarked in Genoa. The online records of the Bonegilla centre at Search then show the person arriving in Australia was born in 10/11/1935 (as with the missing Alexander) and was born in Austria. This gives a lot of international connections and, assuming the missing man and the 1958 Australian arrival are the same it would help to know why he was in the USA and when he arrived.

Just to add a bit more information. I am fairly sure he arrived in California before 1971 (and so, presumably was settled having lived there for 17+ years). This assumption comes from the chess result of an A Lengheimer reported in The California Chess Reporter of July/August 1971 at http://www.chessdryad.com/articles/ccr/V21N1.pdf. (see toward the bottom of page 9 and top of page 12). This at least excludes the possibility that he was either just a recurrent visitor to the area or a recent immigrant. Unfortunately he appears to have been a fairly weak player and a search on the FIDE ratings site does not show any player of his name - but this is not surprising (I played myself but stopped in the mid 80s when my rating would have disappeared).
