On 2 January 2016, a LE welfare check on a residence in the 100 block Morrow Street in Fort Bragg found Dennis's body on the floor. He had been beaten with a hammer as well as stabbed. The well-liked woodworker was a Mendocino County native.
Caleb Dain Silver was a homeless crank addict known to Boardman. They had lived on the same property when Silver was a child, and there was an avuncular relationship between them. After Dennis had beaten his own addiction to alcohol and consequent homelessness, he was sympathetic enough to the younger man to offer him a temporary home. There had been police calls responding to the residence pre-murder.
A BOLO were put out on Dennis's 1990 truck, which was missing with a distinctive home-crafted wooden camper mounted on it. Dennis's dog Bugsy was also missing. On 3 January, LE in Carpinteria in southern California contacted Mendocino LE; they had found the truck on 30 December 2015. Bugsy was inside without water or food.
On 5 January 2016, a CHP trooper patrolling near Elk CA spotted the main suspect, Caleb Dain Silver. The miscreant dropped a bag of goods pilfered in some nearby burglaries and bolted into the forest.
Silver was eventually arrested in Santa Barbara CA under an alias and returned to stand trial. His trial was delayed for 10 months because ADA Tim Stoen had to recover from brain cancer. As he had been charged with First Degree Murder with a special allegation of Lying in Wait, a prompt trial would have left him exposed to the death penalty.
The 26 year old defendant has rejected a plea bargain proffer of 15 years to life for the murder, with his burglary and animal cruelty charges dropped. His trial is slated for 10 October 2017.
