I’m bumping for Bear.

So one of the top sources answered a question I had. It is said he did not have a cell phone.

It is said he left on foot, and unless he had substantial hiking gear he undoubtedly would have been doing a lot of hitchhiking. Hitchhiking is not only much rarer in recent decades, but the collective aversion to riding or picking up hitchhikers, if you’re a typical person, maybe filters and increases the risk that someone who is willing to pick you up has bad intentions?

It would be nice to know if he was outfitted with a backpacking backpack, with a tent and things like that, if he was going to hybrid camp and travel by hitching rides. But hitching your way around might still be common enough in some tighter knit regions, it probably is taboo enough on a widespread basis that it would make for an awful way to get across the country. And in 2014 a bus ticket from CA to NC should only cost ~$180 and that’s safe and assured?

There is a part of my intuition that wonders if this guy had other plans altogether and for some reason lied to his family and disappeared voluntarily. True crime podcasts of recent years will argue this is rare nowadays but it is more plausible than is given credit for, a Native American might be able to access off-grid help more easily than a white city man could due to the kinds of family culture and ties and resources available.

But the first intuition is some kind of misadventure not long after he left, such as trying to take cross country type shortcuts through wooded areas. Willits is mountainous, and is adjacent to steep terrain no? In these remote parts of California someone could vanish forever just from a fall or poor judgement in choosing routes if they don’t already have substantial outdoor saavy, and I didn’t read anything about Bear’s outdoor proclivities.
