Pepper Reed (b. September 6, 1952) was last seen by relatives in her home state of Texas in December 1975, in the company of Terry Rasmussen (AKA Robert/Bob Evans, Gordon Jensen, Curtis Mayo Kimball, Lawrence/Larry Vanner. After this visit with family members, Pepper would relocate with Rasmussen to Orange County, California, where they had their child, Rea Rasmussen on June 15, 1976. December 1975 would be the last time Pepper's family would ever see her again.

Pepper has not been seen or heard from after June 1976, and it is assumed that she was murdered by Rasmussen around that time. Despite not appearing on any public records since that time, it is possible that she may have still been alive up to the time that Rea would have initially joined Rasmussen and Marlyse Honeychurch (b. January 28, 1954), and Honeychurch’s daughters, Marie Vaughn (b. December 6, 1971) and Sarah McWaters (b. December 13, 1977). Rasmussen met Honeychurch and her daughters in California. It is not known when Rea joined Rasmussen and Honeychurch, and Rea was not with them when Marlyse brought Rasmussen to meet her family in November 1978 in the city of La Puente. Pepper’s disappearance did not come to public and law enforcement attention until the September 2025 identification of Rea, who is believed to have been murdered around 1980 with Honeychurch and her two daughters in Allenstown, New Hampshire. The bodies of Marlyse Honeychurch and Marie Vaughn were discovered on November 10, 1985 in the Bear Brook National Park, but Rea Rasmussen and Sarah McWaters would not be discovered until May 9th, 2000, because the barrel containing their bodies were missed by law enforcement at the initial crime scene in 1985. It was initially believed that the then-unidentified Rea was related to the other victims, but later DNA testing showed that she was unrelated to the then-unidentified Marlyse, Marie, and Sarah, who were confirmed to be related.

At this time, Pepper Reed has no entries on NAMUS, DoeNetwork, or Charley Project. There are currently no known photographs of Rea Rasmussen, but it is possible that she may be in the photos from Marie Vaughn's birthday party.

When Rasmussen was last seen by his family, he was accompanied by an unidentified woman. This happened in December 1975 or 1976, the same time Pepper was last seen. I'm willing to bet the woman Rasmussen was last seen with was Pepper.

I wonder if Rasmussen's family recalls the woman appearing pregnant or mentioning being pregnant

I’m so glad Pepper and her child have been given their names back, and they haven’t been lost to Rasmussen’s violence and his cruelty. Hopefully, Pepper’s remains can be found as well. It’s nauseating to think of how much pain that man has been responsible for.

Pepper is a good reminder of “the missing missing”: those who vanish and are never reported because they are transient, homeless, nomadic, or otherwise off the grid and/or estranged from society. They matter too, and there should be a better way for us to make sure these individuals don’t slip through the cracks.

I have a slew of theories about what could have happened to Pepper

1. Rasmussen did murder her in 1976 shortly after their daughter was born, but there is a question of who was Rea with or where did she go after that? Did she remain with Terry when he moved to Texas or did he leave her with someone during that period?

2. Pepper was still alive after 1976 and still with Rasmussen, but they dropped out of sight and went off the grid, explaining why she doesn't appear on public records after that time.

3. Their relationship turned abusive and she fled with their daughter, leaving either the county or the state and went into hiding under another name. Rasmussen tracks her down and kills her for leaving him, and takes Rea with him.

4. He left her for/cheated with Marlyse and killed her to start a new life with Marlyse.

5. Rasmussen murdered her over custody and/or child support.

6.. She was able to escape Rasmussen but wasn't able to take Rea with her.

Hopefully Pepper and Denise's remains have already been found but never identified... do we know if their DNA has been compared to all Jane Does nationwide?

There isn't any way for that to happen.

DNA has been recovered in different ways over the years - nuclear can't be compared to mitochondrial, etc.

Some remains haven't yielded DNA. Further testing might get results, but that requires money, and availability of suitable remains. Exhumations are expensive.

Some Does are unavailable for testing due to loss or destruction of their remains. Some areas cremate their Does. Some, horrifically, in the past sent them to landfill. Sometimes skeletal remains are sent off for examination and never find their way back. Some Does are buried but their burials are incorrectly recorded, so finding them is a near impossibility. For example - The Girl in the Box. She's just not in the grave she was meant to be in, it was completely empty, and they have no idea where she actually is.

MOO

Yes absolutely - what I meant is "have the Jane Doe DNA profiles that are in the system been compared to DNA from Pepper and Denise's families?"

I think Patricia Levingston Nowlin may be a good resource for authorities to speak with. She apparently knows that Pepper left the state and when.

Hmm, her last date seen is the week before Christmas in 1975, and not the day Rea was born. I'd like to imagine she was there for that...

I found a different one from 2004 from somebody claiming to be a classmate who was looking for her for a school reunion. Clearly some people who knew her more distantly had realized she was AWOL (the date reported missing in NamUs is Sept 11 2025 for anyone wondering)
