'The Montreal teen facing terrorism charges is now facing an additional case after allegedly assaulting a police officer the day of his arrest.
The incident allegedly took place at RCMP headquarters in Westmount.'

''He is alleged to have been planning a terror attack on behalf of the Islamic State. According to police, the youth was saving money to buy an AK-47-like rifle and had posted “disturbing” comments on social media about attacking unspecified groups of people. While he was charged with assaulting a police officer last week, Friday was the first time he appeared on that additional charge.''

The Crown objects to the youth’s release.

“We believe that there’s a flight risk and we believe that if he were set free, he might commit another criminal offence,” Crown lawyer Marc Cigana told reporters outside the courtroom.''

''The teen is now charged with assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm, participating in the activity of a terrorist group, facilitating a terrorist activity and financing a terrorist activity.'

'The Crown aims to sentence the teen as an adult. If found guilty, adult sentences for the offences range between 10 and 14 years. If sentenced under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, he would face a maximum two years behind bars.''

''Crown to seek adult sentence for Montreal teen alleged to have planned terror attack on behalf of Islamic State
A 17-year-old male facing terrorism charges appeared in youth court Thursday, less than 24 hours after being arrested by 40 RCMP officers at his home in Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. He was flanked by three agents and held behind a barricade inside the courtroom at the Chambre de la jeunesse. He didn’t respond when spoken to and appeared aloof.''

''He appeared in court on Friday, surrounded by three security guards. He remained impassive and stared straight ahead during the brief hearing, while his mother sat in the audience.''
Police had previously said the youth had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and was willing to carry out at least one attack on behalf of the terror group. According to law enforcement, he intended to acquire weapons, such as AK-47s, for the attack and made comments on social media “indicating that he wanted to attack various groups of people,” RCMP Cpl. Érique Gasse reported earlier this month.''

''Psychiatrist Dr. Cécile Rousseau, also a McGill University professor who specializes in radicalization, says that young people are becoming increasingly interested in different forms of extremism as is alleged in this case.''

“What we see presently in young boys in Quebec, but also in the rest of Canada, is an attraction for simple message, certainties and solution,” said Rousseau. “Who provide those certainty? Well, extreme right organization, Atomwaffen organization, white supremacist, but also religious extremism. They all say we have the answer.”
The case will return to court on September 12.

“Those charges are serious enough,” said Marc Cigana, a federal Crown prosecutor, about the 17-year-old Montrealer who was back in court to face five charges after he was allegedly ready to carry out a terrorist attack. Gareth Madoc-Jones reports.
