''According to Mayer Feig, a spokesperson for Montreal’s Hasidic community, the person who recorded the video was Muslim woman, who shared the recording with the victim.

“She would like to remain anonymous but the victim wants to relay his appreciation for her sharing the video so [it] could have been shared and ultimately apprehend the suspect, who committed this horrible crime,” Feig told CTV News.

“I think as a community we should appreciate that, you know what, we might have differences, when something happened it was recorded and was able to be shared with the world, so we can see what happened.”

''Montreal police say they have arrested a suspect in connection with an assault on a father who was with his three children in a park last week.

A video posted on X showed part of the altercation as a man repeatedly punches another man with children standing nearby in Dickie Moore Park, in the city’s Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough, on Friday afternoon. In the short video, the suspect then appears to throw the victim’s kippa to the ground before leaving.

According to police, the victim, a 32-year-old man, went to the park with his kids and was approached by a suspect who sprayed him with the contents of his water bottle. Police added that victim then attempted to approach the suspect, who then pushed the man to the ground “and punched him several times in the face and kicked him.”

''The Crown prosecutor objected to his release from custody and requested he be evaluated to determine whether the accused understands the charges against him.

Michael Morena, a legal aid lawyer designated by the court to represent Preciado, said his client will be evaluated “to see to make sure that he is fit to stand trial. That is, that he understands what’s going on and to see if there are any mental health issues that could be influencing the file and that should be explored more in detail through the progress of the case.”

'A 23-year-old man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm after a Jewish father was attacked in front of his children in Montreal’s Parc-Extension neighbourhood last week. Sergio Yanes Preciado is accused of assaulting a 32-year-old man on Aug. 8 around 2:45 p.m. at Dickie Moore Park, in violation of Section 267(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (assault causing bodily harm), according to the Quebec Crown prosecutor’s office.'

Do we know if they had words prior? Occasionally I think these unprovoked attacks are part of a gang initiation or online thing going on. Sickening.

'Sergio Yanes Preciado, 23, appeared before Quebec Court Judge Martin Chalifour on Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse. He is charged with assault causing bodily harm.'

''While the report on the evaluation was placed under a seal, some of the findings of the criminologist who did the evaluation were mentioned in open court.

“(Preciado) worked at a cinema until Easter, there were difficult moments for him. There was a question of consuming drugs. He seemed to have delirious ideas linked to his actions,” the judge said while summarizing the report, adding some of these details concerning his mental health were corroborated by Preciado’s mother.

'The judge also said the criminologist wrote that the hot weather experienced in Montreal on the day in question might have played a role a what happened.'

Looks like anti-semitism to me, not a gang thing.

Mental health claim is often the defence these days, but seeing "possibly heat contributed to it".... I love it.
Gives all menopausal women an even great excuse to commit........
I agree anti-semitism.

Ain't that the truth. Check out of the We Do No Care Club on IG, peri- and menopausal ladies.

As for the young man, I do not care if you were hot on a summer day. Don't hit a father in the park.

Moo....in extreme heat there are more confrontations. Many times because people consume alcohol or other stuff and the heat makes people short tempered. Just check the police scanners in extreme heat, it's a circus out there.
Obviously there is no good reason to go around beating up random people. Why it has been labeled racism, I am not sure. The court case will clarify if that is the reason and how the confrontation started....Moo

The suspect, 23-year-old Sergio Yanes Preciado, is facing one count of assault causing bodily harm. So far, police and the Crown aren’t discussing the possible motive for the attack. The family of the victim says he strongly believes the incident was a hate crime.

Maybe I missed something but was the victim attacked because he's Jewish?

The video report linked above says the victim stated no words were exchanged before the attack. I'm unclear how it could possibly be called anti-semitism, if not a single word was said.

I was just coming to ask this. I am confused as to why that is part of the headlines if there doesn't seem to be any indication that had any part in the motive. Seems like a salacious headline designed to drive traffic. JMO

ETA my comment is not meant to be critical of OP, just the news orgs and how they have selected their headlines.

The grabbing and throwing of the victim's Kippah (religious head-covering) into the water, might be the reason some are considering it a hate crime. speculation.
As in this case.. rbbm.

''Victim’s Hijab ‘violently’ pulled off during alleged swarming attack: advocates

OSHAWA - A swarming attack on a business owner in Oshawa, Ont., that police are investigating as a possible hate crime has shaken the victim’s family and the broader Muslim community, which has seen a rise in Islamophobic incidents, advocates said Thursday.
Updated July 3, 2025''
ETA head-covering as opposed to hat'.

Agreed completely. The poor guy was attacked in front of his children. That's awful enough without turning it into something else.

I watched the video. It doesn't show the suspect grabbing the man's hat off of him, but it does show him picking up several things and placing them into a bag, and then the last thing is him picking up the victim's hat and throwing it in the water at the splash pad and casually walking away. From the video at least, there wasn't anything that looked like a hate crime, just a violent creep beating another man.

I live in an area with Hasdic Jewish population. Their attire is noticable and their headwear is known. To throw that specific headwear, imo, makes it worth the conversation of whether this was a crime targeted at a Jewish person. It's not unreasonable at all to have that come to mind.

It wasn't just a hat.

I believe you, 100%. The problem in this case is the fact the perp (according to the victim and the lady filming) never once verbally expressed any sort of hate for the man because he's Jewish. It's possible the victim just happened to be in the way of a creepy, violent man.
