''For the 54-year-old Second World War veteran, times and life in general seemed to go from hard to worse. By the end, Harte was an alcoholic vagrant, barely scraping by.
On Friday, March 26, 1976, his corpse was discovered in a dilapidated Ontario St. house downtown. He had been squatting in the basement of the run-down house.
When cops found him, he had been dead for about 10 days. Detectives pieced the low-rent tragedy together but never came up with Harte’s killer.
The story went that Harte was given money to buy booze and returned to the squat empty-handed, probably knocking back the elixir on the way home. As a result of his temerity, investigators believe Harte was then clubbed to death by his drinking buddies.
Harte’s murder was the first of four homicides of down-and-outers in the area. Police never linked the quartet of murders.
