Three people came to the aid of a woman struggling to keep her baby from being abducted in a hospital waiting room, court records said.
The accused would-be kidnapper, Scott F. Russell, 45, of the 6700 block of Maysville Road, was being held at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $13,250 bail.
The kidnapping attempt occurred about 3:45 p.m. June 25 at Parkview Randallia Hospital’s lab registration office. Dispatchers told a Parkview police officer they could hear “loud audible noises and screams” when the call was received, according to court documents.
The attack began as a mother waited in the office, holding her baby son in her arms.
She was seated next to her young daughter.
The mother told the officer that a man she did not know, later identified as Russell, stood up, walked toward her and then started to tug at her baby, leaving red marks and scratches on them. The mother started to scream and kick at Russell, court documents said.
As she kicked Russell, a woman grabbed Russell from behind with the assistance of a man. The woman helping the victim kept yelling “let him go,” but Russell continued to tug at the child, records said.
The Parkview officer found Russell, who immediately told him: “I am very angry with the world and hurting a baby was the easiest way to hurt someone,” court documents said.
Russell was charged Monday with felony kidnapping and battery on a person younger than 14 years old and misdemeanor battery.
His next court hearing is Monday.
