The wife of an Army soldier, who was shot dead while home for the holidays, is accused of concocting a plot with her lover to murder her husband.


Sgt Tyrone Hassel III, 23, was home in St Josephs, Michigan, for the holidays when he was ambushed and killed just before midnight on New Years Eve while bringing food to his wife from a family gathering.

Police say another soldier, Spc Jeremy Cuellar, 24, pulled the trigger in a plan that involved Tyrone's wife Spc Kemia Hassel, 22, who is also the mother of Tyrone's one-year-old child.

All three soldiers were assigned to 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia, according to the Army Times.

In December, Tyrone moved to fort Carson in Colorado.

'The motive for the two to plot Sgt Hassel's death may have been to continue their relationship and reap the Army's death benefit from his murder,' prosecutor Mike Sepic said.

Police arrested both Cuellar and Kemia Friday and charged them with premeditated murder.

A Berrian County judge ruled Wednesday that 22-year-old Kemia Hassel and 24-year-old Jeremy Cuellar will go to trial April 30.

They have pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the killing.

A jury found 22-year-old Kemia Hassel guilty last month in the death of her husband— Tyrone Hassel III.

Hassel is facing a minimum sentence of life behind bars for the murder of her husband.

Tyrone’s mum, Lashanda Jones, said she wanted Kemia to spend the rest of her days thinking about what she’d done.

‘How could you take the life of a man that gave you his last name?’ she asked her former daughter-in-law.

‘A last name that you didn’t deserve to have.'

'I hope every time you close your eyes, my son taps you on your shoulder and smiles.'

'Just to remind you that his life is not over, because he is still living in God, and you will be livingin hell until the day you die.’

Tyrone’s father called the killing the ‘ultimate betrayal’, and promised his grandson will know what an amazing father he had.

The judge was just as damning about Kemia’s future.

‘Ms Hassel, the road to redemption is long and arduous and you will spend the rest of your life walking it,’ she said.

Jeremy Cuellar, the man who previously pleaded guilty to the murder of fellow army soldier Tyrone Hassel III, is now hoping to withdraw that plea.

Cuellar is serving a 65-year second-degree murder sentence after he pleaded guilty to the killing last July, which he now says he was coerced to do.
