This is a well off area. Violent crime is quite unusual....hopefully this means she will be identified soon.

Agreed, I'm in neighboring Macomb county and was shocked when I saw this!

FBI now investigating death of woman found burned in northern Oakland County

From the article:
"It's a semi-remote, state park area, there's a little parking lot there," said Det. Lt. Christopher Hild. "We have to determine whether or not this is a cover-up or this may be some sort of retaliatory incident because of her profession."

"Zhao was a professional poker player and had been living in California for some time. Her friends said she was a private person and are questioning what happened."

"Susie was Last seen by her parents on July 12th."

MOO Not much other new information. I hope Susie gets justice.

ETA to quote the article and add MOO.

I wonder if she was reported missing? I'm sure they are looking at the people close to her (SO, BF, etc).

If you Google search her name with "poker" there are tons of articles, websites, and photos of Susie. Perhaps this was some type of retaliation. Poker tends to be a 'man's' game and some do not take kindly to losing to women. Also, if she was really good, she could have been making a decent living off poker. All MOO.

I think robbery is a possibility, but I don’t think this had anything to do with poker itself. She’s a well regarded cash game player, and likely made a nice living from the stakes she played.

Poker used to be a man’s game, but you see far more women playing now than in the past. I play a lot (or used to before covid), and I’ve never seen a man get angry because he lost to a woman.

There are many thousands of people who play either professionally, or semi-professionally, and I’ve never heard of someone killing another player out of rage (at least involving a casino player). She played on Vegas and LA, and this happened in Michigan.

I think this murder has to do with something else.

The charred remains of a professional poker player have been discovered in a remote, Michigan parking lot,

Susie Zhao, 33, was described as a 'national talent' on the competitive poker circuit, where she was known as 'Susie Q' and would easily take home prizes of tens of thousands of dollars. She is believed to have won $224,671 over her career.

She had lived in between Los Angeles and Las Vegas but friends told WXYZ she had recently moved back to live with her parents in Michigan to 'confront challenges in her personal life'.

Zhao was last seen by her mother on July 12 at around 5.30pm. Her badly burned body was found by a local resident in the wooded area at 8:30am on July 13 in a parking lot near the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, on the outskirts of Detroit, according to the White Lake Township Police Department.

Police believe it is likely she died some time after 11:45pm the previous night, and believe her high stakes job could be a motive. They are also investigating whether her killer may besomebody she met locally and recently.

'You have to determine whether or not this is a coverup, or this may be some sort of retaliatory incident because of her profession,' said Detective Chris Hild, White Lake Township Police. The FBI has now joined the investigation into her death.
