Details of Disappearance​

Appel was last seen in Westlake, Ohio on October 1, 2008. He has never been heard from again. The red 1996 Honda Civic Del Sol he was driving was later located in Taos, New Mexico, over 1,500 miles from Westlake. Few details are available in Appel's case.

Sheriff’s Office finds missing Ohio man’s car

The Taos County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday (July 7) that they found evidence of a suicide attempt but no body over the holiday weekend. Officers responded to García Park near

<<Undersheriff Ed Romero said that the man, 33-yearold David Appel of West Lake, Ohio, has been missing since last October. Romero said the car was found abandoned, though Appel likely tried to kill himself at some point.

“We found garden hoses taped onto the tail pipe leading into the passenger-side window,” Romero said. “We’ve recovered new evidence in the area that we are looking into. Right now the investigation is ongoing.”

Romero said that Appel’s family hired a private investigator last October to track him after he stopped using funds his family was sending him. Romero said that when the investigator failed to find Appel, he was reported missing. Appel was later tracked to Mount Rushmore, Nov. 10, before purchasing bleach and ammonia in Taos, Nov. 20, both of which were found in his vehicle.

The car, Romero said, had likely been there all winter.>>

<<“At this point, we think he drove up to García Park, attempted to take his own life without success and because he had no gas in the car, he might have started walking,” Romero said. “We suspect his remains are somewhere in the García Park area. ”

Romero said investigators found clothing and a single bone fragment about 300 yards from the car that support the theory that Appel may have begun walking.

“The situation is consistent with him suffering from hypothermia,” Romero said.>>
