PA - Explosion at US Steel plant leaves people trapped under rubble.

CLAIRTON, Pa. —
Emergency responders are on scene as heavy smoke rises from U.S. Clairton Coke Works plant. A source tells Pittsburgh's Action News 4 an explosion occurred at the plant.

Video from Sky 4, Pittsburgh's only news helicopter, shows fire crews battling flames.

Dispatchers confirmed multiple people have been injured. The extent of those injuries is unknown.

Clairton Mayor Rich Lattanzi posted the following: "Just a report of an explosion! Asking for multiple ambulances! My prayers go out to anyone involved in this tragedy and their families and community."

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said his administration is in touch with local officials in the area as they respond to the explosion.

An Allegheny County emergency services spokesperson, Kasey Reigner, said one person died and two were currently believed to be unaccounted for. Multiple other people were treated for injuries, Reigner said.

"At this point, officials can confirm there has been one fatality in connection with this incident. Two people are currently believed to be unaccounted for, and multiple individuals have been treated for additional injuries," the statement said.

First responders were trying to rescue people trapped in the rubble, the Associated Press reported, adding that the number of injured is in the dozens.

U.S. Steel said that a heating and cooling failure in one of the plant's batteries resulted in a buildup of flammable materials that ignited and caused the boom.

Leaders called it a rare occurrence and the impacted battery was taken off line.
