You'd think that would make identification fairly straightforward. Is there something preventing a review of the patient admission and discharge registers? I'm not from the US so I don't know how HIPAA and that kinda stuff affects this. In the UK, patient registers from former mental asylums are sealed and inaccessible until 100 years have passed. Is it similar in the US?

I just reviewed the hospital's archives, and unfortunately it said that research requests for certain patients are held confidential until the patient had been deceased for at least 50 years or if the records are over 75 years old. However, according to HIPAA policies information may be disclosed if the researcher provides evidence that it is solely for research purposes.

There is also a twenty dollar fee to submit a request, so I'll attach it in case anybody wants to fill out the form.
