Phil Lesh, Grateful Dead Co-Founder and Bassist, Dies at 84

Bassist Phil Lesh, whose dense, inventive playing powered the Grateful Dead and, following the 1995 death of guitarist Jerry Garcia, many of the San Francisco band’s touring reincarnations, died Friday. He was 84.

The news was posted on his official Instagram page with the message “Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of The Grateful Dead, passed peacefully this morning. He was surrounded by his family and full of love. Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love. We request that you respect the Lesh family’s privacy at this time.”

Obviously a big loss for me, but Phil had a great run. Many don't know he was donated an organ and lived many years because of it. So I'll take my time remembering Phil by asking everyone here to make sure you let those you love and those who make decisions for you after your passing to please consider donating and let them know about it if you wish.

I was privileged to see the Grateful Dead in concert many times and Phil Lesh with his base was an integral part of the magic. It's sad to reach an age where all of the Good Ones are dying off.

Phil Lesh wrote and sang "Box of Rain", one of my favorites. Many years ago, on the way to a David Bowie concert, my friend broke the cassette player in my car. After the concert, we had a long drive back home in the dark with no music (radio stations in rural Upstate NY were sorely lacking), so three of us sang "Box of Rain" over and over again to stay awake during the drive because it was the only song we knew all of the words to (the guy who broke the tape deck slept through it all...)
