Fears are growing for a missing British holidaymaker who vanished during a night out with friends hours after flying to the Algarve on Tuesday.

Greg Monks' worried sister Jillian sounded the alert today, saying the Glaswegian had last been seen in the party resort of Albufeira during a first night out in the sunshine resort and describing his disappearance as 'completely out of character.'

She wrote on an Albufeira expat site: 'My brother has not been since Tuesday evening. If you are currently there and have any information place contact me with any info.'

Alison Meechan Fraser, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, subsequently confirmed the 38-year-old had been reported missing and police were looking for him.

She said: 'He was with a group of friends. All the other boys are at the accommodation.

'They all arrived Tuesday, went on a night out and none of them have seen him since late Tuesday/early Wednesday.

'It's out of character, he's 38 and named Greg

It says he was seen on CCTV at Cerro da Aguia. Looking on Maps it looks purely like a residential area. How did he get to there I wonder?

I've had time to look at the maps further - how on earth has he got to Cerro da Aguia - its in the opposite direction from Albufeira?

There’s a big marina near to where he was, I hope this has a good ending but my heart sinks when I see water near men who have been drinking.

But he was last seen on CCTV in a residential area

"The group of lads were understood to be in King's Cross karaoke bar in Albufeira's nightlife hub before Greg became separated from the group."

"His girlfriend, Nicole, is over in Albufeira, she checked through his case to see what was missing. We think he might have had a navy blue Nike shorts and top set on."

"She said: "The group had only been there for a matter of hours. They checked in and were only in the apartment for 20 minutes before heading out again."

"Police have had drones out and search teams going over Cerro de Águia."

"But it is really rocky terrain it's very quiet and residential. We don't know why he has went there or how he has ended up there."

"Until we see proof we don't know what to believe."

"But she says the family have yet to see proof that Greg was spotted in Cerro de Águia and are asking police to show them the CCTV clips that has caused the search to focus on the hilly area."

So the family have not been shown the CCTV of Greg in Cerro de Aquia, which is in the wrong direction and a residential area. Surely they need to look at it too? JMO MOO

There is a search group on Fb for Greg, should be easy to find, I see sister is admin so group looks official (family run). It’s certainly worth a join, even the first post I saw people want to no about the friends he was last with. Hopefully it will stir up more interest and awareness for Greg which could do with a push and u thought it would generate more interest over here.

Hopefully, I have input the correct locations: Novochoro Apartamentos Turisticos, Kings Cross, Cerro de Aquila on Google Maps.

I put directions for walking the entire route, because I don’t know if the friends took ‘Uber’ or some other mode to Kings Cross..

Greg was with his pals in the King's Cross bar on the strip.

Portuguese police have told relatives that he was last sighted on CCTV around four miles from his apartment and the strip in a quieter residential area of Cerro de Águia.

Loved ones are now trying to piece together Greg's last movements
as they step up the hunt to find him.

Sister Jillian Monks says the exhausted search-party,
including Greg's mum, dad, cousin and girlfriend Nicole,
are numb as they scour the Algarve.

Re the friends:

"They are all devastated and shocked by what has happened.
They spent the rest of the time there searching for him and trying to help.
They have all returned home today,
Greg should be back home with them'."

I’m following the search group on Facebook and have asked (probably a silly question ) whether they have found any CCTV beyond the last CCTV sighting of him in Cerro de Aguia - hopefully they can trace the direction he was moving and the trail doesn’t go cold.

This is the second stag party tragedy of the British I have read about recently.
The other case was a murder on some kind of cruise ship.
(There is thread on WS)

I'm surprised the man in Portugal didn't call taxi/Uber to return to his accommodation
or that none of his friends did it for him.

Did he leave not telling anyone?

Separating from a group, especially in a foreign land can be dangerous.

I hope the man is found.

I wish they’d show his family the CCTV sighting of him in the residential neighborhood.

First of all, so they can ensure that it IS him.

But also, what was his demeanor on the CCTV like: was he stumbling? Look confused? Or did he look purposeful, like he knew where he was going?

Did he encounter a fake taxi/Uber? Or a street scammer of some kind?

Or did he experience some kind of sudden mental health crisis?

Yes I agree - a lot of people have been asking what made the police check CCTV in that location? Was it a tip off by a taxi driver that dropped him there? Perhaps he misheard Greg’s Scottish accent and he was dropped off in the wrong place?! The fact his phone had no battery as well is worrying as they can’t even track that. Very sad and strange.

I had assumed police located him via his phone pings.

Have police said specifically his phone was off during the whole of his wandering or did it perhaps turn off at Cerro Aquia?
