The community of Eldorado Park south of Johannesburg is reeling in shock. This after the parents of a two-year-old boy and his four-year-old sister were arrested on charges of attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice. This comes after the mother confirmed to police that her partner has allegedly been assaulting and sexually abusing the children. The pair are appearing in court this morning. The killing of Nathaniel Julies from Eldorado Park has lifted the lid on other psychosocial issues the community has been facing. Sociologist and researcher, Dr. Hlengiwe Ndlovu joined Mpho Sithole to unpack some of the social dynamics that Eldorado Park is facing.
It’s alleged that the father had sexually and physically assaulted the little girl at their home in extension one on Wednesday. The little girl is currently on life support at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.
“The community had explained to me what had happened. It was sad that at that point the SAPS didn’t proceed to the crime scene. It was sad to listen to what actually happened to this little girl. She was being brutally violated from 8 o’clock the morning until two o’clock in the afternoon. SAPS has failed this girl. The fact that they could only respond to the crime scene a day later. They arrested the dad yesterday and just left and never ever returned, never bothered taking statements, didn’t bother doing anything until last night when I had to contact the head of FCS unit and she too wasn’t notified by the local police station.”
