El Grupo Especial de Actividades Subacuáticas (GEAS) se suma a la búsqueda del senderista

The operation covers land, air and water in areas such as Pradera de Ordesa, Góriz, Monte Perdido and the Pineta Valley, covering more than 15,000 hectares. Patrols comb the trails, examine aerial images with sensors and check critical points with specialised divers.

After more than two weeks without news of the hiker, the Guardia Civil is not ruling out any possibilities: accident, fall, disorientation or even external causes. The involvement of the GEAS is in response to the need to rule out the possibility that he has fallen into the water or is in a submerged area.

Más visitantes, más riesgo: la montaña aragonesa registra en junio y julio más de 150 rescates y diez fallecidos

Every summer, the Aragonese Pyrenees and other natural areas in the region become a destination for thousands of hikers, canyoneers and mountaineers. This year, there have already been more than 150 rescue operations by the Guardia Civil, with ten fatalities and one American citizen who remains missing since 14 July. The data confirms the trend of recent years: more people in the mountains means a higher risk of accidents.

Ten people have died in the mountains or while participating in outdoor activities so far this summer, five in June and five in July. Two lost their lives while canyoning, three mountaineers fell, two people drowned in swimming areas, two hikers died while on an excursion – one from cardiac arrest and the other after fainting for unknown reasons – and athlete Marta Jiménez died while base jumping.

Hiking continues to be the activity with the most rescues. ‘It's the one that people do the most. From stumbles or exhaustion to getting lost, everything is included in the statistics,’ explains Javier Franco of FAM..
Through the campaign promoted by the Government of Aragon, the FAM and Aramon, they are working to raise awareness among sports enthusiasts. Especially hikers, where basic mistakes continue to be repeated: ‘Not carrying enough water, not checking the weather forecast or not having a GPS downloaded are common mistakes that lead to many rescues.’

Veinte días de búsqueda incansable del joven estadounidense desaparecido en Ordesa

This Saturday marks twenty days since the start of the search for Cole Henderson, the 27-year-old American who disappeared in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. There has been no news of him since July 9, when he parked his car in Torla and put his cell phone in airplane mode before setting off on a hike.

The command post coordinating the operation moved to Jaca this week, but the search continues on the ground "on land, water, and air," Baín Gutiérrez, head of the Mountain Intervention Rescue Group (Greim) of Aragon emphasized . He does not rule out the possibility of the checkpoint returning to Torla, because "this can change at any moment."

What remains unchanged are the efforts of Greim to find Cole Henderson. "We're using search dogs, drones, a helicopter... We're also using personnel from the mountain units of Aragon, Navarre, and Catalonia, and the Pegaso team of the Guardia Civíl has also intervened." The latter is a unit specializing in aeronautical management and operational safety based in the province of Teruel.

The terrain is vast, but "the search here doesn't end" until the missing person is located or the investigation determines that the young man is not in the National Park, Baín Gutiérrez explains.

This weekend, te Military Emergency Unit joined the extensive search operation to locate Cole Henderson, a young American who disappeared on 9 July in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. Members of the UME searched the area around Gradas de Soaso together with the Guardia Civil, heading towards Pradera de Ordesa, one of the most popular spots in this natural area.

Las preocupantes cifras por desaparecidos en Aragón: más de 500 fueron por menores de edad

The disturbing disappearance of a young American three weeks ago has raised alarm bells. Teams from the Greim and Guardia Civil continue to search tirelessly for 27-year-old Cole Henderson after no news of him has been received, with the only clue being the location of his rental car at a campsite in Torla before he set off on an excursion in Ordesa.

If the location of the car is the only clue they have, this would imply that indeed no one has come forward to report that they have seen him in Ordesa.

This was confirmed today by members of the Guardia Civil's Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (Greim) and the Military Emergency Unit (UME), who had been searching for him for a month.

The young mountaineer's body was located at around 1:15 p.m. ‘in an area that is difficult to access, about 200 metres below the north face of Monte Perdido’. As announced by the Guardia Civil in a statement, the body found showed ‘signs incompatible with life and was evacuated by the Benasque Air Unit using a crane cycle and transferred to the Boltaña helipad, where the funeral services were waiting to take it to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Zaragoza.’

Hallan sin vida a Cole Henderson, el montañero estadounidense desaparecido hace un mes en Ordesa y Monte Perdido

After nearly 30 days of uninterrupted searching, the mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Cole Henderson, a 27-year-old American mountaineer, has come to a tragic end. Members of the Civil Guard's Mountain Rescue and Intervention Groups (GREIM), together with the Military Emergency Unit (UME), located his body on Friday on the north face of Monte Perdido, in the heart of the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, Huesca.

The discovery was made at 1:15 p.m. in a spot that was very difficult to access, with a vertical drop of about 200 metres.

On 2 August, the Military Emergency Unit reinforced the operation with mountain personnel, canine services, drone operators and aerial resources. Coordination with the Civil Guard made it possible to intensify efforts in the most technical and dangerous areas of the park.

According to Captain José Manuel Mora González, head of the GREIM in Aragon and Navarre, Cole's backpack was the clue that allowed the search to be focused on the place where his body was finally found. The work on rough and high-risk terrain forced extreme caution in every move.

El capitán que ha liderado la búsqueda de Cole Henderson: "Su mochila fue clave. La vimos a lo lejos y fuimos al rescate"

His backpack was key to locating him. This was explained by Captain José Manuel Mora González, head of the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Groups (Greim) of Aragon and Navarre. ‘We saw it in the distance and immediately thought it could belong to the missing person,’ he said minutes after the discovery was confirmed.

[ Cole Henderson ] was finally found in a ‘completely inaccessible’ area where the rock was ‘too smooth’ to reach it and determine whether or not there was a body next to the backpack.

At around 3:15 p.m., the Benasque Air Unit was able to approach by helicopter. ‘Based on the characteristics of the clothing he was wearing, it could be him, in the absence of full identification,’ Mora added.

And what could have happened to Cole Henderson to end up in such a difficult-to-access area? That is now the big question. At the moment, there are several theories and hypotheses, but they are just that. ‘He may have been climbing in the northern part of Monte Perdido. We don't know the exact date he died, but we do know that between 10 and 11 July there was a storm in the area that brought heavy hail. Perhaps he became disoriented, slipped on a rock and fell those 200 metres,’ the head of the Greim said.

That theory makes perfect sense.

And it sounds eerily similar to what likely happened to 22 year old Austin King last Sept. in Yellowstone's back country.

He summitted Eagle Peak at ~7:30 PM in a sleet storm with driving winds and dropping temps (that dumped feet of snow overnight). He made a few calls from the summit and then disappeared.

Some sleuthers here on WS still can't get our heads around the risks he took. His father has organized a private search mission that starts next week. Hoping he can recover Austin's body, like Cole's was.

And that's why you need to check the weathee forecast before hitting the trail and either plan your route accordingly to be able to reach shelter, or stay home.

Family of 18-year-old found dead in Bradenton pond calls for FBI investigation

I can understand their grief but I don't see this being a case for the FBI. So far there is no evidence of it being a homicide although the investigation continues.

However, authorities say the investigation is far from over.

They're still working to find out why Giovanni got out of the car and how he ended up crossing several lanes of traffic before ending up in the retention pond. "Did he slide in there? There's a lot of theories of what could have happened," the sheriff's office spokesperson said. "Toxicology could be critical here...

10 people have passed this year alone in this park. Wow. It is definitely a place where one needs to be in top physical shape as well as knowing exactly what you are doing. I love to hike but I know my limitations…of course I am a little older now and when younger may have taken risks. So I never try to lay blame when people pass doing something they loved. Oftentimes it’s just bad luck.
