PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos — A boat was found drifting about a mile off Grand Turk island with 20 dead people on board, including two children, authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands said Sunday.

Officials said investigators had ruled out foul play but were still trying to determine what happened. The identities and origin of the dead were also under investigation.

This is sad. I wonder what happened here...

Turks and Caicos Weekly News

A boat containing 20 dead bodies found drifting near Grand Turk is thought to have floated more than 3,500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from West Africa.

Work is ongoing to identify the deceased and return them to their loved ones, according to a press release from the Royal TCI Police Force press office on Tuesday, July 13.

Probably refugees looking for a better life, I guess they died of dehydration. Very sad.

Boat off Grand Turk containing 20 bodies suspected to have originated from west coast of Africa

"It is believed the deceased persons originated from the West Coast of Africa, and neither the Turks and Caicos Islands nor the region was their intended destination. Although the details of the intended journey are yet to be established, we believe the vessel is linked to a similar vessel found in the waters of Tobago. We are liaising with the authorities there."

In May 2021, a boat with 14 dead bodies and other human remains which was found drifting off the coast of Tobago, was traced back to vessel stolen from Mauritania, a country in northwest Africa.

Trinidad officials said the Africans may have died of thirst and hunger.

Deeply saddening to hear.

If only somehow they could have had access to water and food by meeting another boat whose occupants could have helped them.

May they Rest in Peace.

I think there was another boat. Was it robbery or poisoning? The individual (s) that did it more than likely got away in another boat. Very strange that many people died and didn't put up a fight.

If you're stuck on a boat with others, with no food, no water and no other boats or land in sight for days and days on end.....well, there is nothing to put up a fight for.

Eventually, everyone will become too weak with hunger and thirst and pass away. That's what happened here.

I think the Turks & Caicos police determined there was no foul play.

To die of starvation is so sad. Maybe they were looking for a better life and never made it.
