Atlas Air cargo jet operating for Amazon Prime Air reportedly crashed on approach to Houston, Texas | Daily Mail Online

A twin engine Boeing 767 Atlas Air cargo jet violently crashed into Trinity Bay near Anahuac, Texas, shortly before 12.45pm on Saturday afternoon.

There were three people on board Atlas Air Flight 3591 that was carrying Amazon Prime Air cargo, the Federal Aviation Administration said citing initial reports.

There are no survivors in the deadly crash, according to the Chambers County Sheriff's Office.

The flight had departed from Miami and was bound for George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas when it nosedived and plunged into the bay, which is just about five feet deep and is mostly mud marsh.

Officers and rescue teams have flocked to the scene where broken detritus of the plane was visible in the water along with bits of floating cargo such as women's clothing and cardboard boxes.

Sheriff Brian C. Hawthorne described the crash as 'total devastation'.

'We haven't been able to find any survivors or any remains. I feel like it's probably a crash that nobody would have survived,' he said at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

The FAA lost radar and radio contact with the flight approximately 30 miles southeast of Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The last transmission sent to the aircraft warned of heavy rain near the airport.

According to FlightRadar the jet had departed Miami at 11.33 local time and was scheduled to arrive at Houston Intercontinental at 12.53 local time.

Weather could have been a factor. Pilots requested a westerly
turn and ATC refused, so pilot went east instead. Erratic winds
were coming into area at the time.
Structural failure will also be looked at as metal and parts fatigue
is critical on these older aircraft. there was a 2014 bulletin put
out regarding replacement of some attachment parts on the
elevators and plane operators were given 6 years to accomplish.
Plane was 26 yrs. old and had pretty high mileage/hours of
flying time.
FAA won't be saying much til black boxes are found which should happen in next day or two. With just 5 ft. of water and mud, they
should find them shortly.
I follow most crashes closely since my elder son is a commercial
pilot and has flown cargo also. He's concerned these guys were
friends of his.

I can't imagine the heavy rain would have been a factor and the wind shouldn't have if they were still 30 miles out. I wonder what their altitude was when the "dive" began? My first guess would be some sort of mechanical failure. But that is just a guess of course.

Search continues in Texas bay for missing pilot

Authorities are searching a bay off southeast Texas for clues about what caused a Boeing 767 cargo plane carrying Amazon packages to nose-dive into the shallow water, killing all three men on board.

A north wind has helped searchers by exposing more of the large debris field left Saturday when Houston-bound Flight 3591, which Atlas Air was operating for Amazon, disintegrated on impact in Trinity Bay, about 35 miles east of the city.

Deputies and investigators from the FBI and NTSB have been gathering human remains and looking for the plane’s black box, which records flight data and voices in the cockpit.

The bodies recovered have been identified as those of Conrad Aska, the 44-year-old first officer and co-pilot of Atlas Air Flight 3591, and Sean Archuleta, a 36-year-old jump-seat passenger, according to statement late Monday from Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne.

Archuleta, a captain with Mesa Airlines, had been getting a lift back to his home in the Houston area, his friend told the Houston Chronicle. Archuleta was a new father and weeks away from starting his “dream” job flying for United Airlines, according to Don Dalton, Archuleta’s roommate.

Search continues for body at Texas plane crash site | WTOP

Texas authorities have found part of a human body at the site where a Boeing 767 cargo plane crashed Saturday, although it’s unclear whether it belongs to the missing crew member.

On Tuesday afternoon, a search dog found “part of human remains” amid the debris field left when Flight 3591 slammed into a shallow bay about 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of the Houston, according to a local sheriff.

“It’s not a body,” said Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne, adding that DNA testing was needed to identify the remains.
