Was this child disabled? A normal 9-year-old could get out of the car, and why didn't the mom check on her during lunch breaks? I have a feeling there's more to this story.

I could have sworn there was already a thread for this case and I had commented on it? menopausal brain fog I guess.

I think the girl was either special needs or had been terrified by her mother on the dire consequences she might face if she left the vehicle.

I also wanted to add that one of the symptoms of hyperthermia is loss of consciousness so by the time the child was really in trouble she may not have been conscious any longer to try to get herself out of the situation.

Theoretically she could have fallen asleep on the way there and overheated and died while she was sleeping after she was left, right? Or maybe she knew she was too hot but didn't realize how much the car was contributing and didn't know it would be cooler if she got out?

What a senseless loss of life. We may never find out why this awful accident happened.
So, so sad and preventable.
Nevertheless, the mom is in big trouble.

with the victim and mother not named it will be hard to follow this one. My mind for some reason keeps wondering if this is a mother who was undocumented. If she was, she will be removed by ICE and we may never hear another word :(

Might explain how a child was terrified to leave the car.

Oh, this is so sad. The mother works 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 pm at a manufacturing plant. 911 was called at 2:06 pm. IMO She must have not had any child care and thought her daughter would be safer there than left alone at home. Another tragic hot car death.

BTW that's a 5-hour shift, not 8 hour.

nice questions, but actually i would love to know more about the mom, is she married, living alone ?

It never ceases to amaze me just how stupid people can be ( the mother. I don't want folks to think I am referring to other posters). It is Texas in July ( not that there is ever an appropriate time nor place to leave a child in the car alone for 8 hours).

A few things, because not everyone understands the true danger / greenhouse effect.

It was stated she left the windows partially down, left water, and her daughter was 9 years old, not a small child. Maybe she figured her daughter was old enough to get out of the car and sit in the shade if needed. Maybe she thought, I am desperate to keep this job and will only do this today, and see my daughter right after work, and it will be okay.

Desperation, denial, lack of really thinking the possibilities through. IMO.

Just a small correction - the article does say her standard shift is 6 a.m. to 2 p.m, so that is in fact 8 hours.

I can only concur that this is an awful tragedy, no matter the situation.

Sorry, that was my mistake. You're right. Maybe I was thinking about the girl's age when I wrote 9:00 a.m.

This happened on a Tuesday... Why wasn't this girl at school?

School is out for the summer in the US in the vast majority of school systems.
