Janette Escamilla Jaramillo
March 26 2025
''AUSTIN The Texas Rangers and the Laredo Police Department have identified the man believed to be responsible for the 2016 killing of 33-year-old Janette Escamilla Jaramillo, of Laredo. Almost a decade after Jaramillo’s death, a Webb County grand jury has indicted Sergio Mendez, 42.

On May 18, 2016, around midnight, Jaramillo — a mother of nine — left work to return home, but never made it''

''As daylight broke hours later, her body was discovered by Laredo Parks and Recreation Department employees underneath a skate ramp at Seven Flags Park – just blocks from where she lived. Jaramillo had been brutally strangled after an attempted sexual assault.''

''Latest info: At a June 16 pretrial hearing in the 111th District Court, Judge Monica Z. Notzon presided as both parties addressed outstanding motions. The upcoming calendar was determined including final pre-trial July 21 and jury selection Aug. 25. Earlier this month, defense counsel filed a sealed motion requesting the appointment of an analytical chemist, along with discovery motions related to DNA and biological evidence. A subpoena was also executed for medical examiner Dr. Corinne Stern. ''

Justice has been a long time coming for Janette’s loved ones. Thank goodness for DNA testing and the Texas Rangers cold case unit.
