Oxford Circus stabbing: Man charged with murder


A 26-year-old man from Swansea has been charged with murdering a man who was stabbed to death in central London.

Stephen Dempsey, 60, was attacked outside the Microsoft store in Oxford Circus on 1 Jul and died in hospital.

Tedi Fanta Hagos, of Ravenhill is accused of murder and has appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court.

He has also been charged with possessing an offensive weapon and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

Mr Fanta, dressed in a grey tracksuit, was assisted by an interpreter during the hearing earlier.

The Met Police said Mr Dempsey's next of kin had been informed and were being supported by specially trained officers.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The victim was knifed in a "random and unprovoked attack" in the capital's busy Oxford Circus on Thursday evening.

Stephen Dempsey, 60, from Belfast, was stabbed four times during the attack on July 1, including once in the heart which proved fatal, coroner Fiona Wilcox told a short hearing at Westminster Coroner's Court on Friday.

On Tuesday, Tedi Fanta Hagos, 25, of Ravenhill, Swansea, appeared at the Old Bailey charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Judge Mark Lucraft QC set a plea hearing for September 21 and remanded the defendant in custody.

Following the incident, police released an image of the two brave skateboarders and appealed for them to come forward.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that the two men had 'led the intervention to apprehend the suspect following the attack'.
