An American woman accused of plotting to murder a shop owner and members of his family in the UK is to face trial this summer.

Aimee Betro, 45, was charged after a man was threatened at gunpoint in South Yardley, Birmingham, in September 2019.

She has previously denied conspiracy to murder, possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and a separate charge related to the alleged importation of ammunition into the UK.

Ms Betro, originally from the US state of Wisconsin, appeared before Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday when the case was adjourned for trial on 21 July.

BACKSTORY:

A father and son have been jailed for a combined 42 years, for conspiracy to murder after hiring an alleged female assassin from the USA to kill a family in the UK.

Mohammed Aslam and son Mohammed Nazir recruited 44-year-old alleged contract killer Aimee Betro for a retaliation killing in Birmingham. The gun jammed in the bungled attempt to kill boutique clothing store owner Sikander Ali, on the street. Betro, a Wisconsin native from Milwaukee, took a selfie featuring a devil horn effect the day before she allegedly attempted to kill the family.

Along with posting pictures of cocktails, she had also braggingly claimed to have met her "partner in crime" in Manchester. After the failed attempt at murder, she headed back to a home in Birmingham in a taxi and shot at the house three times, a court heard.

Since no-one actually came to any physical harm as a result of this series of unfortunate events, I think we can genuinely describe this case as comical.

The guy who survived due to the bungling assassin's gun jam also wasn't at all squeaky clean, making me think this was about more than just an argument in a clothes shop:

Cross-examining, prosecutor Tom Walkling KC, said: "You didn't try to murder Sikander Ali, but you were around the corner around six minutes later? But you didn't fire the shots in the early hours of the next day? That was this other American woman using your phone, wearing shoes like yours?

"It's all a terrible coincidence is it? It must have been another American woman in Birmingham at the same time as you, who knew Mr Nazir, who sounded similar to you, do you agree?

"So was this mysterious woman who shares so many characteristics was also staying at the Rotunda? It does seem rather like you, doesn't it?"

The trial continues.

I'm just surprised she didn't create an imaginary identical twin sister to blame it all on instead.

Well it doesn't look like they reached a verdict on day 1 of deliberations.

I'm not so sure, one of the articles I posted above mentioned that a juror had asked the court if they had used "forensic voice matching" software to confirm it was AB's voice on the voicemails.

Maybe some of the jurors might be a bit more skeptical than we think.
