A race against time to find a kidnapped 10-year-old Polish girl identified only as 'Maya', has ended in Friedland, Germany, where she was located alive Wednesday. She had injuries to her leg (probably where she tried to escape) and was hospitalized for a short time. A man previously convicted of abducting a nine-year-old in Britain was with her and has been arrested, but police have refused to reveal his identity or nationality.

Investigators feared Maya was in extreme danger when she failed to return from school Tuesday to her home in Wolczkowo, North West Poland. A suspicious Opal Vectra was seen in the area and when police traced its owner and he told them who he had lent it to, the information that came up triggered a full-scale alert. Police used the new National Child Alert system for the first time to spread the word. Amber Alert Europe was also used, which led to police in Germany spotting the suspect's Opal Vectra by the side of a highway some distance from the border with Poland.

Maya's father has thanked everyone for their help and asked for privacy. Polish authorities are now working to obtain an international arrest warrant to extradite the suspect. Hopefully, at some stage at least as much of his identity will be revealed as his victim's.

There really aren't that many people convicted of abductions of nine-year-olds in the UK...

Adrian Markowski has a name that sounds as though he could have links with Poland, and he was jailed for just 18 months! for abducting a nine-year-old girl in Yorkshire, England, last year. I wonder if it's possible he was given early release and went to Poland and offended again? I really hope UK authorities haven't been that lax, but the cases have some remarkable similarities...
