An Ariana Afghan Airlines plane has crashed in the central Ghazi region in Afghanistan, officials have said.

The passenger plane had 83 people on board when it crashed, local media said.

Arif Noori, a spokesman for the provincial governor's office in Ghazni city, said: 'A Boeing plane belonging to the Ariana Afghan Airline, has crashed in the Sado Khel area of Deh Yak district of Ghazni province around 1:10 p.m. local time.'

The number of casualties was unclear, a second official told Reuters.

I hope there are survivors and the plane wasn't shot down.

Definitely avoid the daily mail on this one. They have corrected their headline to state up to 9 dead.

I’m really sorry for the confusion I caused.

Not your doing; it's a war zone. I don't know a sole who'd expect accurate initial reporting from a war zone.

There was an Ariana Afghan Airlines plane on similar flight path at the time and a total of two Ariana Afghan Airlines plane in the air at the time of the crash. Local assumptions were that it must be the one on the similar path ergo how the pax info came out. Meantime, both those flights end up checking in as safe and accounted for so "no one knows who owned the plane" then hits the airwaves.

Everyone else comes to find out it's actually a US civ-modified comms aircraft (I guarantee the US knew that immediately) - the rest of us had to wait for the footage of it to come out showing the roundel before the US would confirm it as one of theirs.

Having seen some planes the Taliban actually did shoot down, I'm not seeing that here. They may be claiming so, but I'm just not seeing the type of damage I'd expect to see. Doesn't mean they didn't, just means that the Taliban like to claim these kinds of things when it's the US or a NATO ally, so I'm not holding my breath on that.

Fog of war. Nothing to do with you or the Daily mail; it's just what happens with most initial media accounts (and it was the local media who put it out there and the DM just picked that up) even more so given it's a hell of a place to be.

My prayers and condolences to the service persons lost and to their families. "Lest we forget - For honour and country."
