What a shame they refused to seek medical help. Tragic.

Methanol poisoning is pretty brutal. It's entirely possible they would have died anyway.

I don't think it's usually deliberate, it's common to make homebrew in SE Asia, and there aren't facilities to inspect the products.

Like the cases of botulism from home canning...or the 400 plus Americans who die annually from salmonella contamination.

I expect someone had consumed lemoncello from this source before, and had been fine.

I follow a woman on IG who is in Bali on vacation and recently got very ill and proclaimed it 'Bali Belly', which is pretty common when eating local food internationally, etc. My point being, that people know you can get sick if you "drink the water", "get a parasite", etc. and perhaps when they fall ill, they just assume it could be that and not something more deadly?
