So a couple of Chinese in an inflatable dingy with a hand held pinger happened to hear some pings! What are the chances of that in a search area that big? What is going on?

Edit. I think it's for real that they think they heard something otherwise there is no way it would be being checked out otherwise. The Chinese ambassador obviously confirmed it to Angus Houston directly. Even still what are the chances?

There has been 3 different accoustic events. 2 from China 1 day apart and a new one from Austrailia ship Ocean Shield is investigating its own acoustic event which was just found out about 1 hour before news conference.

I may be reading too much into what i heard but I think the Chinese fleet of ships are pretty much controlling their own search teams and are just communicating to Austrailia any results they get.

I base this assumption on how surprised the Austrailia search control seemed to be about the Chinese being in that Southern spot and also the fact they are just now going to get a chinese translator liason to be present in their control room.

CNN said an Australian source connected to the search said the centre had learned of the alert several hours earlier but had not been able to communicate directly with the Haixun. While other search crews report possible evidence connected to the flight directly to the joint research centre, the Chinese teams report it to Beijing first

Its interesting and good to note that the Ocean Shield also has an "autonomous submersible vehicle" that can be sent down to get pictures once they can ever determine the location of the black boxes. I sure hope they find the boxes and plane this time.

“Once we no longer had it (the sound), the ship would be turned, which in itself is quite a long process given the length of wire out behind the ship, and make a number of passes.

They would then send the autonomous vehicle down to get high-resolution images of the wreckage."

I don't think we'll hear anything until....calculating....Monday evening or Tuesday morning.

I guess we could hear tomorrow (evening here) whether or not the Ocean Shield ping was confirmed or denied?

But for the Chinese acoustic sounds, I don't think we'll know until probably Tuesday.

They are saying on CNN that they can retrieve the boxes from 14,700 feet. That is encouraging. Seems to me if they know the depth, they are somewhat optimistic. JMO

Hi Amee. My confusion is were the pings heard from the Haixun 01 by some hull beacon detector or a towed sonar array or just by a hand held pinger in one of their rubber boats? If they picked it up from a sensor on the ship itself I don't find that strange, but if it was in their dingy, that I find unlikely.

I wondered if it could have been a submarines sonar but that's a totally different sound.

MH370 tragedy has pulled so many countries together and all working for the same cause. Could it be a first?
So many vessels from so many countries hurrying to the one location is inspiring.
