A favorite stuffed animal lay beside Karl Wiik and Bobby Wiik in their coffins yesterday. The toy cat Karl's father brought to the hospital when he was born nine years ago - thus earning the boy the nickname Pussycat - was next to him.
Next to 5-year-old Bobby "The Bear" was his stuffed Teddy. Inside each coffin lid was a student of the month certificate from Holy Family Regional School in Commack, where Karl was in the third grade and Bobby in kindergarten.
In between their coffins was that of their mother, Linda.
...friends and relatives devastated by the Sunday boating accident that left all three dead in Smithtown Bay and Linda Wiik's companion, Kevin Hansen, still missing.
As Suffolk County Police continued their search for Hansen, simultaneous wakes were held for the three victims...
Vincent Verzino, a housekeeping employee at Kings Park Psychiatric Center where Linda Wiik worked as a nurse for 12 years, said she was kind and thoughtful. "She made us feel equal and no different from the others," he said. "She treated the patients nicely."
It was at Kings Park that Linda Wiik met Hansen, relatives recalled.
...hospital spokesman Ken Marion said Hansen had spent a few months as a patient, ending in March, 1993.
Wiik, 36, and Hansen, 30, lived with the boys in East Northport. Police said the four set out on Hansen's boat, Family Values, in late morning or early afternoon Sunday, and the vessel apparently struck something. The Wiiks and their dog were found wearing life vests. Relatives are at a loss to explain why neither Hansen, a carpenter, nor the boat's steering wheel has been found. Hansen's life vest has been recovered, but searchers have found no other sign of him.
"I don't understand why the steering wheel hasn't been found," said Robert Wiik, who had separated from his wife four years ago. "Why hasn't Kevin been found?"...
In an interview, Hansen's brother, James, of Westbury, said that his brother was a careful boater. "Kevin didn't take risks," Hansen said. "That boat was for fishing and to stay right out by Smithtown Bay where he knew the water. It was a freak accident."...
"He loved Linda, he loved the boys," Hansen said. "We knew that Kevin wouldn't be alive because Kevin would save those three before he would save himself. We don't know much about what happened or why it happened."
