Who Killed Beverly Jaye Potter Mintz? Nearly Three Decades Later, Murder Remains Unsolved
"Lorene Potter ran from her daughter's blood-spattered bedroom in Leland, N.C. on Feb. 23, 1987, her grandson held tightly in her arms.

"Mean man hurt Mommy, Mommy cry," he had said when she scooped him up and fled through the rear door, Potter later told her family. He was just a day shy of his second birthday.

Potter ran to the florist shop next door. The florist called 911 and before long, multiple patrol cruisers with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office lined the driveway leading up to the Village Road home of 23-year-old Beverly Jaye Potter Mintz. A forensics team and agents from the State Bureau of Investigation soon joined the officers.

"It was a very violent, brutal, and chaotic scene," Tony Cummings, a retired investigator with the State Bureau of Investigation, told The Huffington Post on Wednesday."

"Godwin, the criminal investigative psychologist, disagrees.
"I believe the individual had been stalking her," he said. "The person was comfortable watching the house and going in. He knew there was not an adult male in the home, so he had to be watching."

Godwin added, "The newspaper ad could be a ruse left at the crime scene to taunt [investigators]."

For Braswell, Godwin's theory makes the most sense.

"She had started receiving strange calls every so often before she was killed," Braswell said. "The calls always came after she got home and the person would hang up, so that's another reason we are thinking somebody was watching her."

While the two men disagree on the killer's modus operandi, they do both believe the killer is an experienced criminal, who left the Mintz's son alive because he was confident the child would not be able to identify him.

The killer, both men said, also slid in and out of the home during a short window of opportunity, without anyone taking notice.

"It is one of the things that stands out the most," Godwin said."

Cold case anniversary: 32 years later, brutal murder remains unsolved
February 23, 2019
"LELAND, NC (WECT) - It was a murder so horrific, veteran police officers were shaken up. And 32 years later, the question of who killed Jaye Potter-Mintz remains unanswered.

Detectives say on Feb. 23, 1987, someone raped Potter-Mintz, slashed her throat and stabbed her repeatedly."
Cold Case: Jaye Potter-Mintz

"Detectives got a break in 2000 when Potter-Mintz's murder made the front page of USA Today. Hundreds of law enforcement officers across the country called, saying they were dealing with a similar murder.

But though several women were murdered in a similar way, no evidence led to the killer, said Sheriff Ron Hewett.

The best hope now is a classified ad Potter-Mintz took out to sell a water bed.

"The exact article was circled, and in her home at the time of this horrific crime," Hewett said. We feel the murderer brought that to her home circled."

Cold Case: Family keeps hope alive decades after young mother's murder in Leland
''The murder
On the day Mintz was killed, her 4-year-old son, B.J., was visiting his paternal grandmother. Almost-2-year-old Andrew stayed home with his mother.
Mintz had taken out a classified ad for a water bed she was selling. She listed her mother’s phone number in the ad and about 9:30 a.m., a man called Potter asking to see the bed.
Potter gave the man directions to her daughter’s home, then called her daughter to tell her the man was coming.
Mintz told her mother she had already sold the bed. Potter told Mintz to tell the man that the bed had been sold and not to let him look at it.
About noon the same day, Potter stopped by her daughter’s house and found Mintz dead on the water bed.
The case
Investigators initially thought Mintz’s attacker could be someone close to her, according to a Feb. 22, 2000, story in USA Today.''

''The USA Today article says the killer was organized. He was calm, knocking on the door instead of breaking in. He was prepared, bringing rope, gloves and a knife. He was discreet, coming and going without being noticed by the roofing crew on the house across the street.
The killer took his knife with him. Investigators never found a weapon, fingerprints or a motive. They did find DNA evidence and a copy of the newspaper with the want ad at the scene.
As the DNA was used to eliminate suspects and persons of interest, investigators quickly ran out of leads.''

''Now it’s a matter of hitting the right name and seeing whether the DNA matches with evidence from the crime scene, he added.
“All we need is a name,” Crocker said.
He said someone could have left town quickly after the murder or repented to a friend, among other scenarios. Details like those could have seemed inconsequential at the time but could provide a good lead.''

Jaye Mintz Leland 34-year-old cold case still unsolved
''Mintz had been raped and her throat was cut. She had eight stab wounds. Her hands were tied behind her back with nylon rope.''

''The killer was skilled and was able to get in and out of the house without anyone noticing or hearing a thing, West said.''

"You’re dealing with a case that has the hallmarks of a serial killer," Godwin said. "The way the crime was conducted was not your typical murder. She was overpowered when she answered the door, and she had a knife placed at her throat."

''Godwin said Mintz was sexually assaulted and her body was placed in a sexual position with part of the pillow on her face.

Nylon rope was used to bind Mintz's hands behind her back, according to Godwin. He said it looked like the killer had some type of boating experience because of the way the knot was tied, and it was the kind of rope used to tie a boat to a dock.''

''West said law enforcement officers across the country contacted the sheriff's office on several occasions dealing with similar murders, especially since the case gained national attention in 2000 when it made the front page of USA Today for a horrific murder in a small town yet to be solved.

"My feeling is that someone knows something somewhere," Watts said. "We just need that one person to talk."

They certainly had the DNA cause this poor woman was raped and murdered. Apparently, The DNA is on the national database, obviously there was no match, perhaps he has not committed a crime. The only way to solve this crime is to put the DNA on the GED website to see if there is likely matching DNA's from long distance relatives and friends of the killer, all they have to do work on this diligently.

But we have been warned that we cannot be swayed by gender bias.

Three decades later, murder of North Carolina mother remains unsolved
Feb. 26, 2021,
By Andrea Cavallier
''Jill told Dateline her sister was recently separated from her husband, who was stationed in Germany at the time of her murder. Jaye got a job as a waitress at a restaurant in nearby Wilmington and had started dating again.''

''A few months before Jaye’s murder, her cousin, Angela, moved into the house in Leland with her young daughter. Angela told Dateline Jaye received unwanted attention from several admirers around that time.

There was a man who would write “I love you, Jaye” in the gravel drive of their house. And the man who left a single red rose for her at the restaurant where she worked.
But Jaye, with her quiet demeanor, was always kind to them.

''But when the strange calls started, Angela was concerned. She said the calls began after Jaye placed the ad for the waterbed. The calls would be sexual in nature and the caller would taunt both Jaye and Angela, depending on who answered.

About a week before Jaye’s murder, Angela walked by her room and noticed that she seemed upset.

She was lying on her bed and I asked her if everything was OK,” Angela explained. “She told me she had a dream about a strange man trying to kill her. After she was killed, I couldn’t shake what she said. It’s like she knew something was about to happen.”
