As the investigation continues, Leon urges local residents to lock their doors and be mindful of their surroundings.

“The days of leaving your doors unlocked are over,” he said. “The Sonia Varaschin case is certainly an indication that crime can happen anywhere at any time. We’re certainly seeing an increase in some violent crimes occurring in the area and I think the public has to be cognizant of that fact.”

An update on Shelley's condition was posted Monday night on her FB page. As per the TOS I cannot copy and paste the post here. Apparently she had a medical procedure done (no mention of when) to decrease the pressure on her brain, and taken out of induced coma. By the time of that post, she hadn't woken up :(

No further updates since then; everyone is praying for her speedy and full recovery.

Prayers for Shelley and her family.

A news conference regarding the Sonia Varaschin murder investigation will be held on Thursday (Dec. 16) at 11 a.m. at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre in Orangeville.

"There’s something happening ... (but) don’t get too excited, nothing earth shattering," he said.

In a statement, the OPP and the Orangeville Police Service said the public will be brought up to date on what they've learned at a news conference Thursday morning.

"At that time, members of the media will be briefed on aspects of this recent investigative summit and updated with regards to the ongoing investigation into Varaschin's murder," the statement said,

They brought in a lot of the "big guns" for this case, now I am really curious about who they are looking for!

"Police in Ontario sought assistance from the FBI's behavioural analysis unit, located at Quantico, Va., along with specialists from Ontario Provincial Police and the RCMP. The summit also included senior homicide detectives from the OPP, as well as police departments in York Region, Ottawa and Toronto."

This newest attack is also 10 hours from the 4 bodies found on the beach.... Sonia's murder was after both the May and June disappearances that are possibly connected to the bodies and some of the bodies have been there as long as 2 years. Maybe killing one every 6 months or so unless there is a stressful time which causes him to escalate?

I wonder what a serial killers limit is on "okay, I've killed enough people here... I should probably move onto somewhere else and change my MO a bit before I run out of luck in this area...."

Just an observation...

More info about this as dotr posted earlier today. The article also has the name of the Mono woman who was attacked. Her name is Shelley Loder and her home is 5 minutes from where Sonia's vehicle was discovered with its doors open and covered in blood.

"Last Saturday, an OPP forensics van was parked for most of the day outside a Broadway apartment building in downtown Orangeville, just a five-minute drive from the semisecluded townhome by a ravine where Varaschin lived alone."

and

"The apartment building is also just a five-minute drive from the country home near Mono off Hwy. 10 where professional photographer Shelley Loder was attacked last week."

Hmmm...wonder what's up with that apartment building on Broadway.

"This will show that the investigation and the investigators assigned to this case have certainly been doing an awful lot of behind-the-scenes work," Leon said Wednesday.

"To have the calibre of investigators to be able to meet for three days as they did is something I've never seen before. I don't think we've had the opportunity to bring so many experts to the table from so many different walks of life."

Okay, the FBI thing, could be something as simple as Det.-Sgt. Jim Smyth (or another behavioural profiler, OPP officer etc.) inviting their FBI counterparts to assist in their investigation.

OR

It could indicate some sort of interest that the FBI has in these crimes, possibly because of similarities to a perp in their country.

or to see if there's a link to the attack on December 7th?
