Investigators want the man for sexually assaulting a woman a week ago behind a Metro grocery store in downtown Orillia.
The woman was walking by the loading docks behind the store around 2 a.m. when she was attacked and assaulted, the OPP said in a release last Wednesday.
Officers said it was a daring, brutal attack during which the victim could have died.
“It was a violent assault,” one cop said. “The victim was grabbed and choked from behind and could have been killed.”
Surveillance cameras captured the suspect as he was leaving the scene.
He is described as male white, with a stocky build and about 5-foot-9. He was wearing socks, shoes, a dark shirt and a light-coloured ball cap.
“The victim has been traumatized and is still recuperating,” OPP Sgt. Pierre Chamberland said on Sunday. “She is expected to recover.”

Seems the media is being pretty quiet on this story. Also, if the perp was actually at the casino, LE will definitely have better video of him. But, he could simply be a local of Orillia.

Was the place behind the Metro a common place for people to walk through?

Where was the video of the perp taken? I guess it was security surveillance as he was leaving the scene, according to one article.

- Notice that if you turn left, there is a dirt path that leads to Centennial Dr.

- Still cannot figure out where the video surveillance camera is mounted. Perhaps one of you sleuths can compare this image with the video released by the OPP, and figure out which way the perp fled.

Here is a picture from Google Streetview, from Neywash St. looking south at the loading docks and back of Metro, I think.

The 2nd picture is if you are on Neywash St. turned 45 degrees, looking west. There are some little paths, which is where the perp ran (I think).

Directly to the left of the paths there are 2 restaurants, one on either side (Chinese Restaurant facing the path). Also, there is a Motel, directly adjacent to the Metro, fwiw.

By the direction of the parking lot lines, the building location directly adjacent to the sidewalk and road, the video cannot have been taken on the Motel.

It may have been taken on the Metro, as Centennial St. does appear very close, but I think there is a fence there, and am not sure that there would be designated parking spots located in the area of the loading dock.

I think it's possible that LE is asking for witnesses in the Neywash and Laclie area, because there were 2 Restaurants and a Motel, but, the attack happened at the other side of the Metro, or the perp ran to the other part of the Metro AFTER the attack.

Thanks Wondergirl. I agree with you, it doesn't appear to be the back of Metro; I cannot see any parking lot lines back there.
After spendiing a lot of time zooming in & out that area, it appears to me the attack could have taken place around the green area (towards Centennial Dr.), and IMO the perp is seen running diagonally, crossing the parking lot of the Motel (side of Metro), and heading towards the front of Metro. Otherwise, what we see in the video is the front of Metro itself.

The other side of Metro is adjacent to a Shoppers Drug Mart. I also tried Bing and Wikimapia but no luck

We will soon find out if this is the same perp. It was 2 am so it was dark and outdoors so I doubt he had time to 'clean up' the scene, and hopefully he left behind some hairs or other DNA for LE to compare. I was thinking that perhaps the 'daring' means he didn't use protection?

Good point about the "daring", which makes me wonder if it was easy to get DNA from SV and if the reason Sonia was moved so brazenly from her home, was to get rid of "daring dna" as some posters have previously suggested.

Okay, I totally take back my post upthread, lol.

Upon further review of all the businesses, on Google Streetview, I think the video was indeed taken on the side of the Motel, or from the Metro but zoomed in on the Motel, and that's why the video is so grainy.

The signs/air units on the side of the building, are shown in the video. The little patch of green grass has a No Parking sign directly in front of it, streetside. You can see this in the video.

You can also see the little "T" leading from the parking lot to the street, to the right of where the perp is running in the video. It appears that it may be an actual vehicle entrance, but you can't tell from the video, and that wouldn't make sense anyway, since the parking lot lines indicate parking at the "T".

The video is definitely showing the perp running from behind the Metro, by the Motel, towards the intersection of Neywash and Laclie St.'s., IMO.

Regarding the word "daring" - I think that's been deliberately used by LE for their own purposes and for the protection of the public.

It seems like this perp (same as in Sonia's case) is ruthlessly 'daring'. Just think of the bloody mess left in Sonia's house and on her car!

Could there be two people out there who are so daring?

2:00 am on that date, temperatures were 14/15C .. not hot, but not really that cold. Looks like the guy was wearing long sleeves, along with jeans, socks, shoes; so doesn't sound like some young dude who closed down the bars, or was just out for a leisurely stroll on a summer's evening.

Turning so distinctly left at the front corner of the motel would then put him either veering back left onto Front Street (where he would have been very obvious running in front of the empty mall and parking lot at that time of the night), OR possibly running straight up Neywash, which looks primarily residential. If he veered onto Front St at all, i doubt it was more than a few feet, otherwise he didn't have to run up the side of the motel at all, he could have simply run from the back corner of the Metro towards Front, without going past the motel onto Neywash. If he did veer off Neywash onto Front at all, he may have run into the lane/lot behind the Remax building at the corner of Neywash and Front.

That's it Wondergirl! You nailed it! He does seem to slow down once he reaches Neywash St., and doesn't seem to me that he continued onto Laclie St. I so hope other business in that area (Master Lube, the Motel, etc.) have surveillance cameras and have also 'captured' images of him.

Odd that he turned left, when he could have run towards Tecumseth St. There is a very secluded and dark area, where he could have left his car parked (or bike?). Why go towards the Motel and commercial area, where there are also houses and risk being seen?

also, what was he doing there at 2 a.m., except laying in wait for a victim or was it spur of the moment (on his way home from work/bar/party)? are any businesses around there, besides the motel, open at that time? was the grocery store open? (some of them are 24/7) I hope they pull surveillance from nearby bars

I think he'll be caught quickly if people in that area think about who they associated with that night who was dressed in that manner and who has reddish hair - the jacket & hair will be his downfall IMO

the only way he'll get away with this is if he's a transient and no one really knows him ... and if so, then he's also probably long gone

Maybe the woman saw his socks if he lowered his pants. What was the description of the pants? Jeans?

Was the woman leaving work? Why was she behind the Metro near the loading docks? I know there could be parking behind the grocery store. I just don't see this as similar to what happened to Sonia. Someone knew Sonia lived alone and broke into her house through an unlocked door IMO. He did what he did in her home, not in the open. This seems more random although if this woman was working and going back to her car, then I suppose he could know her routine. JMO
