Lavergne to go before grand jury

A grand jury will be asked on July 18 to decide if there's probable cause to indict Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, of Swords on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of UL student Mickey Shunick of Lafayette.

"A prompt presentation to the grand jury was expected," considering the magnitude of the case and the tremendous amount of publicity it has received, Crowley attorney Clay Lejeune, one of Lavergne's defense attorneys, told The Daily Advertiser on Tuesday.

...

"The district attorney can invite the accused to come in and participate in the discussions," he said. "The district attorney has not offered an invitation at this time for Mr. Lavergne to testify before the grand jury."

...

Grand jury findings usually are announced the same day as the hearing.

"I would expect something on the afternoon of the 18th," Lejeune said.

Until now, there was a gaping hole in what is known about Lavergne's whereabouts after Mickey disappeared. Surveillance video captured her on St. Landry Street at 1:48 a.m. On May 19th. Moments after, the white pick up truck police believe is Lavergne's can be seen following Mickey.

After that, it appears he headed east on I-10 to New Orleans. On May 19th, Lavergne checked into Oschner Hospital on Jefferson Highway around 11:00 pm, claiming he had been attacked and stabbed several times by a stranger at an unknown gas station.

Police will continue to search more land in connection with Lavergne

Police clear three areas of what they're calling "suspicious mounds of dirt" in the search for Mickey Shunick. A Lawtell land owner reported the mounds, near Saint Ann Catholic Church in Lawtell, only a few miles from suspect Brandon Lavergne's home. Although the search turned up nothing, police say they will not stop looking. Wednesday night police received a tip from a farmer in Lawtell saying he found suspicious mounds of dirt near his property.

Finding Mickey Shunick, two months later

11:49 PM, Jul 14, 2012

Charlie Shunick has found herself exhausted since Lavergne's arrest, especially since it has not yet led police to her sister.

"Brandon Lavergne is a person who may be responsible for my sister's disappearance," Charlie Shunick said Friday in an email to The Daily Advertiser. "But he hasn't led us to finding her, so he's just another piece of the puzzle that still hasn't produced the only result we care about — bringing Mickey home."

...

"There is a reason police are saying she is deceased though, and we certainly keep that in mind," Charlie Shunick said. "But until I am standing over her casket at the funeral, I am going to believe that she is out there somewhere waiting for us to find her."

When asked whether Rowe had a shred of hope left that her daughter could be alive, she responded "maybe just one."

Craft: We don't know where she is, and he does

Craft said police are still not sure whether Shunick was ever in Lavergne's mobile home, but crime scene investigators processed the scene "like she was." There was no body or human remains, nor a GPS, in the burned-out truck, but Craft said there very likely was evidence related to the case.

...

Craft understands the public's frustration with the department releasing so few details about the case, and admits that police have information and evidence that fills in a lot of blanks and answers a lot of lingering questions. But he is just as adamant that most of those details will not be released until the court proceedings get under way.

Troubles follow suspect

Equusearch is again searching for Mickey Shunick. Lafayette Police asked the search and recovery team Equusearch to come back two days after Brandon Lavergne's kidnapping and murder arrest. Equusearch was here for about a week soon after Mickey's disappearance in May. They left after exhausting all leads.
About a dozen Equusearch team members were searching today in St. Martin Parish, but still no sign of Mickey.
