Murder charges are to be filed against airman Rickey Lee Massey Jr for the murder of his wife of less than a year. He's accused of strangling Theresa Rivera in the kitchen of their home after a struggle, then overdosing. Her children were reported to be in the home at the time.

Massey, based at Nellis Airforce Base outside LA, is being held at Clark County jail.

"Prosecutors in Las Vegas are filing a murder charge against a 32-year-old Nellis Air Force Base technical sergeant who was arrested after he was found asleep and nearly unconscious in a home where investigators discovered the body of his wife beneath a blanket in the garage.

Rickey Lee Massey Jr. is accused of strangling Theresa Rivera, a 34-year-old mother of two, during a domestic argument in their kitchen late Jan. 16, and then taking what investigators feared was an overdose of medication or sleeping pills found nearby, according to a police report and a criminal complaint made public Wednesday.

...He remembered Rivera yelling at him and said he grabbed her around the neck and waist before they both fell and Rivera hit her head on the floor. Massey told police Rivera kept trying to strike him, and he continued to squeeze her until she stopped moving.

Massey didn’t explain why he put his wife’s body behind a sectional couch in the garage instead of calling for an ambulance, police said. He said he knew Rivera was hurt because she was bleeding.

Rivera’s children from an earlier marriage, ages 13 and 10, were home during the fight. But police said they went to school Friday before base security officers found Rivera’s body.

Those poor children! I hope there is a relative who can take them in.
To me- if someone accidentally dies- you call for help. Not stow the body and let the kids go to school in the morning like nothing happened.

Court date set for airman in Nellis slaying

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEV. — A local judge has scheduled a March 3 preliminary hearing to determine if a Nellis Air Force Base technical sergeant will stand trial in state court on a murder charge in the slaying of his wife.

Rickey Lee Massey Jr., 32, remained in custody and was not asked to enter a plea during his brief appearance Monday in North Las Vegas Justice Court.

The former Nellis sergeant who pleaded guilty to killing his wife was sentenced to a maximum of 25 years in prison for the crime.

Rickey Massey, 35, was arrested in January 2014 and instead of going to trial agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder.

The family asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence for this crime.

In the end, Judge Michael Villani imposed a sentence of a minimum of ten years in prison, with a maximum of 25 years.

The judge said he weighed the facts and couldn't determine with any specificity that Massey would be a danger to the community for the rest of his life.
