A jury trial may be held in early February for the Readsboro man accused of murdering his son's 19-year-old friend.
Peter L. Kulzer Sr., 69, was arrested in March at his home on West Hill Road after allegedly shooting Thomas J. Oxton Jr., a 2004 graduate of Hoosac Valley High School in Cheshire, Mass., in the head with a revolver. If convicted, Kulzer faces life in prison.

The charges stem from a May 13 argument that Kulzer had with his son, Peter Kulzer Jr., 22, about the amount of time the younger man was spending with Oxton, who also lived in Readsboro, according to
police.

Vermont State Police Detective Sgt. Kraig E. LaPorte reported that the son had returned home to pick up a Sony Playstation video game. As he was packing some belongings into a backpack, he told his father he was thinking about joining the Marines with Oxton.

At that point, the senior Kulzer picked up a handgun off a table in the living room and pointed it toward his son.

When his father was about three feet away from him, the son started walking backward. Police say Kulzer pushed his son out the door and followed him to the driveway, where Oxton waited in the driver's seat of his family's Jeep.

"The defendant opened the passenger-side door, reached inside the vehicle and shot Oxton in the head once, killing Oxton," wrote LaPorte.

This is so totally senseless! These young men were trying to do something with their lives by joining the military. What was wrong with that father????
