CA - Kevin Collins, 10, San Francisco, 10 Feb 1984

Twenty years ago, a freckle-faced, wide-eyed 10-year-old boy disappeared without a trace from a San Francisco street corner and gave birth to what has become the missing children's movement in America.

Doyle Twenty years ago yesterday. And Kevin would now be 30 years old now. It blew me away since I live here in the Bay area and still rememeber the day it happened. And because of this his parents could not take the strain and are now divorced. And he had 7 siblings . It is still a heart wrenching story.

I Too, grew up in the Bay Area and vividly remember the day it happened as well. So real and so scary! I pray that his family is getting some peace in their lives.

Cases like these are so sad. I can't even begin to imagine what these parents must go through, wondering and imagining. I pray for all of these families and these children.

Behzad Mofrad stole the wrong name.

Of all the identities he could have chosen to steal, he chose that of Kevin Andrew Collins, a child abducted from a San Francisco street corner 22 years ago Friday.

The name meant nothing to Mofrad, who had no idea Collins' abduction drew national attention and the boy was among the first whose picture would appear on milk cartons across the country.

"He really made a serious error in choosing this name," said Thomas Depenbrock, regional special agent in charge of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service, which investigates passport fraud. "I don't think he knew what he had gotten into, that this name was well known."

Mofrad, a 40-year-old man with addresses in Pinole and San Ramon, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison Thursday after pleading guilty in November to a passport fraud scheme.

I remember when this happened and it seemed like the case went cold fairly quickly. My brother had told me about someone contacting a Priest in San Francisco to drop Kevin off at some point but it never happened.....I am not sure if that was accurate.

I wonder if they had any suspects........suspects who could be tied to other missing kids in the area?

I remember hearing that at the time also. I grew up in the Bay area and was pregnant at the time that Kevin disappeared. I remember thinking how scary it was that you could lose your child so quickly.

There were SO many child kidnappings and disappearances in that area. Just to name a few in addition to Kevin, there was Michaela, Amber, Anna, Polly, Ilene, and that is just barely scratching the surface.

Scary stuff, especially with so many cases as yet unsolved.

I agree! You would think that they would have been solved by now.

BUT it seems there are alot of missing kids in California....and Adults!
I was just cruising through the missing person posters and noticed that there were alot of MALE adults missing in San Fran, Oakland and a few other city's in the bay area, during the late 70's and early 80's, and they all seemed to happen in certain months, and the men just dissapeared without a trace.

Very strange!

He might have thrown him off the Golden State bridge? How awful!

That would explain why he was never found. the currents around the bridge are wicked!

I know John Dunkle is a possible suspect, as stated in Charley Project, but after reading he was last seen talking to a tall blond haired man, and was seen in a car with two white males, I can't help but wondering if the SFK are responsible. I know a little boy isnt there "usual" victim, but we must remember these guys were on stuff when they did a lot of this-ANYTHING is possible with them and ANYONE around this time period, and who is in CA (southern), could have been a victim. Just a theory,

Reporting they are most likely animal bones and being sent for testing.

http://wap.ktvu.com/site.htm?targetU...ossibly/nT9fg/

"Police said preliminary assessment of the bones indicated that they are from an animal and not human in origin, but that further analysis of the bones was necessary."

How frustratingly inept that they to this day still do not even know if he was in jail the day that Kevin disappeared?? I feel like LE did fail Kevin to some extent for not listening or following up much sooner on this tip. Waiting to see where this investigation goes...

In this CBS article:

Kevin Collins Missing: San Francisco home searched in case of 10-year-old's 1984 disappearance
January 30, 2013 11:07 AM

"A law enforcement official said a "person of interest" in Kevin's disappearance lived in the house at the time. That person has since died.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the search warrant used to inspect the property was sealed.

During the search, cadaver dogs indicated the presence of remains under the concrete in the garage. Police said a preliminary review of the remains showed them to be animal bones, but the San Francisco medical examiner's office was conducting further tests.

Police didn't disclose what prompted investigators to seek a search warrant and renew the probe into the case. The FBI and the Alameda County sheriff's department contributed to the search Tuesday."

___________________

I really want to know who it was that lived there in 1984 and has since died. Why won't they release the name?

A neighbor who lives in the building next door and has since before Kevin disappeared, was interviewed on tv news last night and said he knew the person and he couldn't imagine him being involved. But, of course we have heard that before.

But, another thing I am very curious about is that the Alameda County Sheriff's Department is somehow involved in this case. Alameda County is across the Bay, across the bridge, it comprises Oakland, Berkeley, etc. It doesn't make sense to me that they would be involved in what appears to be a strictly San Francisco City and County case. Maybe a suspect lives or lived in Alameda County?

And, I agree, not knowing where Dunkle was at the time, after all this time, is mindboggling.

With that said, it would be fantastic if this current attempt to solve it succeeds.

Kevin's sisters:

Sisters hope break brings closure in Kevin Collins case
Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013
KTVU.com

"HAYWARD, Calif. The search of a San Francisco home for the remains of long-missing ten-year-old Kevin Collins brought up a wave of emotions Tuesday night for his sisters, Michelle and Laura Collins.

During an interview with KTVU, the two women said they let their brother go years ago assuming he'd been murdered.

But they admitted they have always struggled with the question of what happened. And now, after nearly 29 years, they wonder could this finally be the break they've been waiting for."
