A detective in the case told Channel 4 that at about 5 p.m. a cadaver dog alerted an officer to something in the Dumpster. However, exactly what scent the dog picked up remains unknown.
Investigators set up a blue tarp around the Dumpster and put up floodlights as they began sorting through the contents of the Dumpster.
"It could be various items, and may not necessarily be something related to the case," said Brian Selzer, of Canine Search and Rescue as investigators searched through the plastic bags found in the Dumpster.
Selzer explained that the dogs brought to Satsuma on Thursday have been trained to alert only on the scent of human decomposition, not meat or dead animals. He said the dogs could hit on a something a small as a bandage used to cover a person's bloody cut.
The search by cadaver dogs was the first time in the 17 days of searching for the missing girl, Haleigh's family hopes this search comes up empty.
Also Thursday, Misty Croslin, the 17-year-old girlfriend of Haleigh's father who was the last person to see the girl, was seen driving off in a car with a Putnam County detective. Later in the day, other detectives talked with Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, inside the doublewide mobile home that has been considered a crime scene since the girl disappeared.
Putnam County officials had said it was normal to re-interview family and acquaintances during the course of the investigation.
