POSTED: Friday, June 3, 2011 "Snip"

"Based on my 23 years experience and dealing with 40 decomposed bodies, yes ... my opinion is that it was the smell of decomposition," Gerardo Bloise said.

The state presented and Bloise explained several pieces of physical evidence taken from the car, including hairs that an FBI expert is later expected to testify came from a decomposing body, as well as pieces of the car.

Bloise testified extensively about how he obtained and preserved the 12 hairs for testing.

Day 10: Death Band, Air Samples
FBI Expert Testifies On Hair Sample

ORLANDO, Fla. -- FBI analyst Karen Lowe said hair analysis is not as precise as DNA analysis.

The hair had a dark band that Lowe testified has only been seen in hairs attached to the scalp of a decomposing body. She said tests have shown the band appears between two days and 15 days after death.

Post-mortem root banding has never been used as evidence in a Florida criminal trial until the Anthony case.

Expert: Hair In Anthony Trunk Like Dead Person's Hair
Anthony Could Face Death Penalty If Found Guilty

"Snip" UPDATED: 1:05 pm EDT June 4, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- FBI forensic expert Karen Lowe testified that a hair removed from the trunk of Casey's car is consistent with hair from a dead person.

Judge Perry declared Lowe as an expert in microscopic trace examination of hair.

"In any of the hairs that were exhibits, did you find hairs that showed decomposition?" prosecutor Jeff Ashton asked.

"Yes, one," Lowe said, referring to state exhibit Q12.

"What did you find upon examining it?" Ashton said.

"The hair was a Caucasion head hair that had cases of decomposition," Lowe responded, adding that it was 9 inches long and brown.

Lowe said the hair was similar to one pulled from Caylee's hair brush and was not similar to a hair sample from Casey Anthony.

Under cross-examination, Lowe said that she could not be 100 percent certain that the hair was from a dead person.

Michael Vincent, a crime scene investigator was also called on Sat.

Vincent later said processing Anthony's car was the first time that he had ever collected an air sample.

About 20 minutes after Saturday's proceedings began, a spectator in the courtroom was removed after he fell asleep.

Casey Anthony trial: Experts discuss collection, analysis of samples from Casey Anthony's car
Baez coaxed Lowe

"Snip"
By Bianca Prieto and Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

12:40 p.m. EDT, June 4, 2011
During cross-examination, Baez coaxed Lowe into acknowledging that there are limitations to microscopic hair analysis, basically that such analysis cannot be used to positively link an individual to a specific hair sample. DNA testing must be used to do that, she said.

She also said she requested additional hairs to help make the case stronger, but no additional hairs she tested showed the signs of apparent decomposition. While Lowe has seen the root banding many times in cases of known deceased individuals during her career, she said this is the first case in which she has testified about the root banding.

It wasn't a grieving grandmother, a revealing ex-boyfriend or a volatile jailhouse video that captivated the Casey Anthony jury on Saturday.
